There are a few flights of high steps before reaching the top which is manageable if you go slowly and at your own pace. Do remember to go into the renovated area for the long corridor leading to the part that you can get a good lake view.

We got off a ferry from Imazu at the pier of Chikubu-shima Island, an island with a circumference of 2 kilometers in Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. As I was born in a port town on the Pacific Ocean, a wharf with freshwater around it smells somewhat odd but very fresh.
Hogon-ji Temple was high above uncountable steps. From the top, from the precincts of the temple, the lake water was far dawn the cliffs and bluffs. That gave the precincts a very cut-off-from-the-world air. It was early in the spring. Most cherry blossoms were still in their dozes.

It is one of the main attractions in Chikubushima. The Benzaiten, a goddess of a fortune, which is dedicated in this temple, is one of three major Benzaitens in Japan. This temple is also among 33 pilgrimage temples in Western Japan. The stairs to this temple are hard to go up.

It is one of the three major Benten in Japan along with Aki no Miyajima and Enoshima, and is located on Chikubu Island in the northern part of Lake Biwa. In addition to attractions such as the Karamon Gate, a National Treasure, and the Boat Corridor, an Important Cultural Property, the boat trip on Lake Biwa from Nagahama was fun and enjoyable.
