If there was ever a castle here, I didn't see any sign of it. There is, however, a lovely shrine, fairly small, but beautiful with some glorious buildings and the standard quiet. This is a nice side trip from old Hachiman town, and on the way to the cable car that takes you up to the top of Mount Hachiman.

Whether you want to spend some time with your hun, feel like a small hike, or simply want to see across Lake Biwa, it certainly works. All that seems to be left of the castle is the remnants of a stone wall so it was quite disappointing to find that there is nothing of the castle itself, but the ride in the cablecar and the view is worth the visit.
