A famous azalea spot in Takeo. I heard it's also nice in cherry blossom season, but I went to see the autumn leaves the morning after staying at Takeo Onsen. There was a free shuttle bus from Takeo Onsen. The view of Mt. Mifune and the autumn leaves with the pond in the background is very picturesque.

Mifuneyama Rakuen is an expansive Japanese garden that covers over 500,000 square meters at the foot of Mt. Mifune. The garden was completed in 1845 as a living work of art.
The garden was amazing with its fiery red, orange and yellow colors from the maple and ginko trees. The various walking paths provide different views of the lake and the thousands of plants in the back drop of Mt. Mifune. It was an unforgettable experience.

Mifuneyama Rakuen is a kind of natural park on the foot of Mt. Mifune. It is popular for azalea in spring and red leaves in autumn. As I went there, it was too early for red leaves. But just for this reason, there is only few visitors, and I could enjoy an excellent walking. There is also an event of illumination. But I didn’t see it.

An average short hike. There are not enough road signs along the way, the instructions are not clear, and it is easy to get lost. The landscape was poorly maintained and littered with fallen leaves.
The admission fee is 500 yen per person (but there is no ticket check at the entrance).

From Takeo Onsen station, exit at entrance B and took the bus to Ureshino. Get off at Mifuneyama Rakuen and walked up the road until you see the ticket booth inside the souvenir shop and the vendors selling chestnuts and glutinous red-bean cake.
We bought a combo ticket at 900 yen (day/night ticket at 600 yen each) which allowed us to stay from day till night. Despite early December was a bit late for the autumn foliage, there were still sights of red maples and yellow gingko along the way. The walk up the hill was clean, well maintained with clear signages - good enough for young children and physically fit elderly to enjoy hiking in such poetic atmosphere. We visited the various sightseeing points such as 500 Lohan (monks) cave and hanami pavilion at ease.
Night time was another episode - the sky went pretty dark after six and the place was lit up. Illumination at the lake was marvellous like a Chinese painting. Despite many tourists around, we were still able to enjoy close-up of maple leaves under the spotlight. The walkway up the hill was not totally visible in the dark and children/elderly might not be suitable.
An enjoyable walk with the family in the fall embellished with autumn foliage.

Mount Mifune looked magnificent among its adjacent flat land. The park had a history of 170 years and should be very beautiful in Spring for cherry blossom and in Autumn for red/ golden leaves. However, there was not much to see in early Summer except some Hydrangea and the 300 years old tree. It took 45 mins to walk around the whole park.
We were looking forward to see the colorful bamboo lighting at night inside the park but unfortunately we missed because the activity was delayed to 13 July till 18 August this year.
Another good time to visit the park at night would be 9-24 Nov 2013.
Free parking, admission fee of 300-500 yen depends on the seasonal theme.
Hotel guests staying at Mifuneyama Kanko Hotel and Chikurintei could go to the park for free.

Absolutely sensational event!!! Combination of dim lighting, spot lighting, movement, sound, laser projection and the fact that it takes place in a mountain that is far removed from any visible lights of townships, etc in the country - made for a brilliant 3 hours in a crisp Autumn night! The idea of this event was to blur lines between nature and art - what is art and what is nature. Well achieved by the artists!!! Go if you have the chance and you like nature or art or in our case both!!!

We came one hot summer evening for the light show. It was no easy feat for us as we have a toddler and a kid walking on a very dim, narrow path. The toddler refused to walk most of the time (quite dark and scary for him) and we had to take turns to carry him which made us even more sweat soaked.
But it was worth it. It was a unique show. The lights and music (and the boat) projected tranquility. Had a calming effect. Don't mistake it for a boring show though. Even the toddler enjoyed it.
The rest of the light installations... well I suggest you skip them if you are traveling with kids.

Stayed this hotel for visiting their famous garden, we got unlimited free entry of the garden during the stay. A bit disappointed with the garden, probably not visited at a right time. Helpful staff speaking good English. My room is small decorated in Japanese style. The room price included nice breakfast and dinner. Onsen is opened for hotel guests
