This museum, which displays Hikiyama, floats of famous Kunchi Festival, is certainly one of the main tourist attractions in Karatsu. All 14 Hikiyama are visible at one place. There is a projection of a short movie about the festival.

We totally enjoyed our walk around Karatsu, Japan. One of the highlights was walking through the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall where the authentic floats for the annual festival are lovingly housed. These beautiful and intricate floats dating back to the mid 1800s were so detailed and and colorful that we were thrilled to see them even as static displays. In the hall, they present a film loop showing the pageantry of the actual festival giving life to this wonderful annual custom. Well worth it.

This exhibit shows the hand-pulled floats that the city runs through the streets once a year. It has an element of neighborhood competition, and would particularly appeal to children. There's sweet local set of religious shrines right across the street, worth visiting at the same time. Walkable from the train station.

This is across the street from a shrine so you can visit both. The floats are stored in the building behind glass so you can expect to get some reflections in your photos. Bring a polorizer for your camera. The visit requires a modest fee...and there is a gift shop to buy some items. The floats are large and colorful and it is worth the visit. This makes a good visit on a rainy day.

This place is located just opposite from the Karatsu Shrine and displays 14 festival floats to be used during the Karatsu Kunchi(November 2,3 and 4)Festival. Off course it would be better to visit the festival but still you can feel the atmosphere of the festival by seeing actual floats used. Admission fee is about USD2.50.

Our guidebook listed this as one of only a few attractions in Karatsu, but what s surprise. The floats this exhibition hall holds are incredible – each well over 100 years old and used every year in a massive parade through the streets. The floats are huge and lovingly maintained. There is a video of recent parades and some information about the purpose and history of it. Worth a visit.

This is really a glorified garage housing the parade floats for the Hikiyama Festival. That being said, you really shouldn't miss this. The floats are larger than life and are crafted with exquisite details.

It's a quick stop but well worth the 310yen!
