Newly-opened attraction in Expo City outside of Osaka. The best parts of Nifrel are the small aquaria organized around color, ability, and shape. The tanks are much smaller than the usual aquarium, but they do a great job of displaying specific features like the bright red of the scarlet cleaner shrimp or the jumping abilities of the leaping blenny (an amphibious fish!). Many of the displays are great. In addition to live animals, Nifrel has an interesting light show and a colorful video on biodiversity. Despite being fairly crowded, there were enough different tanks that it did not feel over crowded.
I wish that Nifrel had stayed focused on smaller animals. One area had larger animals -- a white tiger, a crocodile, a pygmy hippo, and penguins -- but some of the enclosures for these animals seemed too small for the animals. These exhibits kept me from giving it five stars. The entrance fee was 1900 yen for an adult, which did not seem crazy, but in comparison, the Osaka Aquarium charges 2300 yen for a much broader range of exhibits (i.e., two hours was enough time for Nifrel compared to spending half a day or more at Kaiyukan).
Expo City is next to the Expo 1970 Park. In addition to several other attractions (including a huge Ferris wheel scheduled to open in 2016), there is a huge shopping mall with a variety of stores and eating options. We ate at the cafe at Nifrel, which was quite good as well.

This place is located just beside Expo City and the nearest train station is Bampaku-kinen-koen Station (Osaka-Monorail Saito Line).
1st area are the fishes and the 2nd area are the land animals like white tiger, monkeys, birds, crocodiles, penguins etc.
Overall, it is a nice place to walk and it is all air-conditioned. Family and elderly friendly place.
I would agree that the place has a very interesting concept that you are actually more closer to the land animals. However, i do feel kind of sad for them as space seems to be quite limited for them since it is indoor. Nonetheless, I enjoyed myself on this visit.

As you enter this place, you will see tanks of interesting fish species. The concept is much a an exhibition with different themes at each zone. There are some rare species of fish that you will get to see.
The concept of having a zoo in-door is an interesting one. There are some animals roaming around but you are not allowed to touch or feed them. There is even a white tiger, crocodiles, and a hippo.
For those who are not comfortable seeing animals in enclosed places, this place may not be for you. My personal opinion is that some of the animals do not have sufficient place to roam and grow. But that's just my personal opinion. I find the concept interesting overall.

Nifrel is located at EXPO area and not too difficult travel from the city of Osaka. If you are not interested NIFREL. You can spend time at the VR Park or the open area or the IMAX cinema. It is very easy spend one full day there especially your kids are below 13 year.
Bampaku-kinen-koen Station, the Osaka Monorail is next to Nifrel.
Nothing is big and a lot going on and I found it very pleasant and interesting too...
Will recommend and will come back

It is worth a visit if you are in Osaka, especially with kids.
Highlight of the visit here is the open area where animals roam-free. You're not allowed to touch the animals of course, but seeing them really up-close and with no barriers is a wonderful experience in itself !
I am impressed with the floor plan - as each area is themed based on your senses. Brilliant and unique!
There is a white tiger there but I think the enclosure seems a bit small compared to the major zoos.
Animals look well taken cared of, I don't recall seeing any that is malnourished or look distressed.
You can easily spend 2 hours here. Go to Nifrel first before you explore Expo City mall.

We loved this place. We had kids aged 8-15 during our trip and we all loved this interactive zoo/aquarium/museum. We spent a good 2-3 hrs inside. Plus there were seating areas for those tired feet and legs while kids romp around. Worth the fee and trip.

While not as big as the Osaka aquarium, it is well laid out and many exhibits are better displayed than at its rival. You can touch some of the fish and part of the display is completely open to visitors to get amongst the safe animals. Little children can also get plenty out of a visit here.

This is a small aquarium but really well planned. It houses an impressive collection of truly unusual and interesting specimens of fish and sea creatures. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent there which I estimate was just over an hour. I would have spent more time if I'd had a companion but I was on my own and did not spend as much time marveling over the exhibits. There were many children there who appeared to be truly enchanted.
I have to say I was shocked at the white tiger's enclosure. It was so small for such a huge animal and was totally bereft of any semblance of a natural environment. I felt sorry for the little hippo that was housed directly across from the tiger. The hippo surely would have no concept of safety from this beast that often stopped its pacing and stared directly at the hippo!
But, all in all, I would definitely recommend a visit especially for families with young children.

Nice far to visit from Osaka center to watch small and colorful fish. Also you can watch white tiger.
2,000 JPY for entrance is seemed a bit of expensive but it’s worth of.
大阪中心部から程よい距離。小さいカラフルな魚を見れます。ホワイトタイガーも。
入館料が2,000円は一見高そうですがその価値はあり。
