This was my first time to this site. I did not know that it existed. The first purpose to this area was to see the place called Hacksaw ridge that is located on the other end of this area. I was surprised and had a...More

Places like this are best when using guides or some kind of back ground material to help understand what you are seeing. For our visit we used my brother who lives on the island and knows a great deal about this place as he gives...More

This ruin had a great place in the history of WWII where Desmond Doss single-handedly winched 75 men to safety from a deep cliff. Checked in at the site office and paid a minimal fee to see the tomb relics relocated to the building and...More

This was the site of a fierce battle during World War 2, the Battle of Okinawa. The place is called the Maeda Escarpment/Hacksaw Ridge. It is the setting for the movie Hacksaw Ridge. The ancient Okinawan kings built a castle here, and the Imperial Japanese...More

Interesting ruins. Hacksaw Ridge has incredible history, but you really need to know the story, as there is not much there to explain it to you. Amazing view of Okinawa.

Restored castle ruins and the hilltop made famous by Desmond Doss's actions made famous recently in the Hacksaw Ridge movie. Consider the battle field on top which is still similar to the condition then just cleared off. Lots of shrines and tombs dot the area.

Definitely stop in the visitors center for 100 yen each. Watch the video about the royal tombs and see the replica of King Eiso's tomb. The staff here are incredibly friendly, although their English is limited. You can get a map, which may help. There...More

This castle, along with most others on Okinawa, has been mainly rebuilt since 1945. While it is a beautiful castle to walk around, knowing that most of it is less than 20 years old, takes away some of the magic.
