Somehow not quite the experience they are aiming for
Jun 2014 • Couples
Agree with other reviews that this feels as though the prohibition of photography is less about preserving the peace and experience than about encouraging you to buy postcards and other souvenirs. We didn't regret visiting this temple, but came away feeling a little underwhelmed and slightly over commercialised. Whilst I understand that visitors constantly taking pictures does spoil the experience and also that everywhere needs income to survive, somehow the balance doesn't feel quite right.

I wish I hadn't returned

Last time I was here I was put off by the sheer commercialism of it. Unlike Ryoanji where you feel welcome to share the extraordinary nature of the garden, at Daisen-in you feel all the time that you're seen as an opportunity to make money. Last time, the ban on photographs, although justified as for the benefit of others, you felt it was because it affected the sale of cards. This time, they admit it's because people sell photos on the Internet. So what, it's free advertising. Move with the times. They are still signs all over, urging you to part with your money. This just destroys what could be the calm of the place. You only see everything if you come with a guide. At least the abbot wasn't spruiking this time. Their hard sell is having the reverse of the desired effect. They, and you, should instead go to Ryoanji, a garden that was virtually forgotten till the 1950s and is on my must-do list everytime I visit Kyoto. I was disappointed last time and
this time, but it has slightly improved
