Besides driving to Mt. Kuju, you can take a public bus from Beppu or Taketa. The schedule is online. The hike takes 4 hours or so, taking time for lunch and appreciating the view. It's very easy to summit the two neighboring mountains, Mt. Naka (highest mountain in Kyushu at 1,791 meters) and Mt. Inahoshi. There is a rest stop just before the final push to summit. A lovely lake is nestled between the mountains, I imagine it would be great to swim in during the summer time!

We drove to Kuju-san from Beppu. The best way is to go along route 11, which takes you right to the pass where you can start climbing. We climbed for around 3 hours, on moderate ground - there were parts where you climb over rocks, but others when the path is very easy. Would be particularly beautiful in autumn with all the colours, but in April was nonetheless beautiful and a great activity to do on a sunny day! Take the suncream!
