The guided tour of the Kesennuma Fish Market is a must for first time visitors to the city. Reservations should be made with Kesennuma Tourism & Convention Bureau at least a day in advance. They have a guide who can give this tour in English as well! The market tour is available at any time, but the best time to see the market is from around 6:30 to 8:30 am. In the winter you can see rows upon rows of swordfish being lined up to auction, and in the summer and fall you can see skipjack tuna (bonito) being offloaded from the boats. At the end of the guided tour, there is a sample of sashimi made from the fresh catch of the morning. All in all, this is THE essential Kesennuma experience.

The market was very interesting with things I have never seen in Hawaii like the ほや which is a sea squirt. The size of a softball but with lots of lumps and a reddish color.
I was told to come back at 7 the next morning to see the fish come in. I went at 5 and was astonished at the amount of fish that lined the docks. Yeah, you gotta see that. That nite at the local bar I had sashimi heart of shark and ほや. That was my first and LAST time for both. I did enjoy the local sake, Luckily the patrons next to me paid my tab. Thank you...
In the same building is the SHARK MUSEUM. Interesting but all in Japanese.

The fish auction tour was wonderful. The fish auction was on holiday the day toured but the guide spoke fluent english so we walked the site and he gave me a history of the area and other things to do in the area. He described the different types of fishing done through the port and recommended other experiences I could try the next time I came to town i.e. fishing and oyster harvesting.

Kesennuma is a small town and famous for their fishing business. This market worth to have a look despite you have to get up very early (5 am). We got the opportunity to see how fish is option. I was surprised that the place is so clear.

A clean and tidy seafood market with no fishy smell. Fresh live seafood, frozen fish, and dry goods. Various and affordable. If you buy fresh fish and shrimp, they will help you with refrigeration and packaging services.
