Awesome Samurai Festival!
Oct 2019 • Couples
We went there to see the festival which is held every first Saturday of October. There were many different acts playing, singing or showing skills with samurai swords. When we arrived we had the opportunity to wear a samurai armor and take some photos.
The highlight of the event was a ceremony held by about 60 samurai performing an ancient battle! It really inpressed me. I won’t forget this day!

Worth a visit from Sendai
Jun 2019 • Solo
I loved my visit to Shiroishi castle. The castle is an easy 15 minute walk from Shiroishi train station (about an hour on the train from Sendai).

The grounds are lovely and the castle is impressive. I was the only one visiting when I arrived so the staff were keen to dress me up as a Samurai. This was a fun experience and I got some good photos.

The views from the top over the city, gardens and mountains is very nice and worth the ¥400 entrance fee.

As I was staying in Sendai and got the train down, I was glad I made the effort!

This was an unexpected find as we had come here for something else.

We hired a car from Yamagata. This was an experience in itself as we weren't familiar with the tollway system but worked it out easily.

Fun excursion
Feb 2019 • Friends
My friends and I were returning from zao fix village to Ibaraki along this route and decided to stop for lunch and look at the castle because we saw it on Google maps. I'm so glad we did.
It's easy to get to, quite small, but has fabulous views from the top. The staff were really friendly and encouraged us to try the samurai costumes and kimono for free. It was really enjoyable, we got a good laugh out of it. Off the beaten track, there weren't many people there around 2 in the afternoon.

Beautiful Place
Feb 2017 • Friends
If you wondered how the castles look like long (very long) time before you were born this is the place. This is not original castle, it have been rebuild but I was still very glad I visited it. It has beautiful garden around it, and you get to take picture in kimono or samurai jacket and helmet with a sword! People who look after it quite nice and friendly, always happy to chat with you and show around. The view from the top level of the castle is amazing.

Well worth quick visit if you are in an area.

Beatiful place. The castle is nice enough, but the surrounding gardens and Samurai house area are very picturesque.

白石城 [白石] Shiroishijō (Shiroishi)
Sep 2015 • Solo
I categorise the destruction of Japanese castles into three waves:
1. The Wars for Unification and the edict that followed the establishment of the Tokugawa Bakufu that daimyo may keep only one castle, and therefore have only one castle per province.
2. The Meiji Restoration: its concomitant wars and the subsequent tearing down of many castles by the Meiji authorities.
3. The Pacific War: usually firebombing which affected urban castles especially.

Shiroishijō actually survived this first wave, as even though Shiroishi was in Sendai-han and controlled by Date Masamune (the bad*ss with the eyepatch), the Katakura clan, lords of Shiroishijō, got special permission from the Tokugawa Shogunate to retain their castle. Unfortunately though the original keep was torn down in 1867 by the Meiji government, following rebellions in the area (the Boshin War).

The main keep and gatehouse were reconstructed in 1995 employing original materials. Even the nails are wooden. Since the reconstruction of this castle is historically accurate, it received high praise from academics. You can see the interior of the castle just how it was in the Edo period. When I went to the castle there was some sort of event on – it was quite busy. Women wearing kimono and men in fine suits were being guided around the castle by a priest (he is pictured descending the castle stairs) behind paper partitions, and spaces had been created dedicated to prayer, and so I gathered it was a religious event. It was nice to see everybody out in their Sunday best at the castle.

Restored Castle
Mar 2016
Unlike many other castles, much of the layout of this castle has been kept in its original format, so it's an interesting visit. It's a small castle, and it's authentic design will make it a difficult or impossible) visit for people who have mobility issues).
