No cats in the island fear people. As well as the cats, local people are friendly to visitors. You're not allowed to feed them, but will be able to approach them without cat foods. If you really love cats and have some time around Sendai,...More

This was a beautiful secluded island in itself, with a very limited population of (very nice) people that live there. Most of the visitors we encountered were actually native Japanese people from other areas of Japan! We knew getting to this island would be no...More

Buy "sophisticate" and "variety" of cat food/snack from lawson/familymart first! (especially fresh fish as cat food in retort pouch.) These cats was boring from typical cheap dry cat food grain (the restaurants/houses on the island had these supply infinite already.) Now this island trip was...More

Not everyone brings cat food, but it is essential. I saw someone feed the cats a donut and pocky. Please don't be like them. Go to a 7-eleven beforehand and pick up a small bag of cat food for 300-400yen. It'll be so worth it....More

It is an island. With lots of friendly cats. Yes, it exists. We stayed one night in Ishinomaki as the earliest ferry to the island is quite early in the morning, which makes travelling from Sendai very impractical(it takes over an hour even with the...More

The island was a bit of a trek from Sendai and definitely needed research the night before as train and ferry times are few and far between. The cats were not in abundance as suggested by the YouTube videos you many have seen but this...More

Had a marvellous day (yesterday) at the cat island. It was badly affected by the tsunami/earthquake and many buildings are abandoned. The cats live in harmony amongst locals and are well fed. We stumbled across a whole house filled with cat food and beds. We...More

Unfortunately, there are not as many cats as you'd expect. I saw them scattered by themselves throughout the island, but the biggest grouping I saw was about 10. I think the construction at the dock ferry port scared them and scattered them throughout the island....More

It's not difficult to get to the island, only 50 minutes from Sendai to Ishinomaki by train and 45 minutes from Ishinomaki port to the island by ferry. There are two villages on the island, Ohdomari and Nitoda. The ferry reached Ohdomari 15 minutes before...More

I cannot remember the round-trip ship fee, maybe 1500 - 2000 yen per person, not expensive for me, but there would be the officer at the port to help you purchase via automatic ticket machine. But I have to go to the port... More

Sendai and animal visits (4 Replies)
We plan to stay in Sendai for three nights in early August. Would this give us enough time to visit Fox Village and Tashiro Island (cat island)? Also, does anyone have any travel tips...ferry timetables etc?

12 days Tohoku itinerary (1 Replies)
I'm traveling to Tohoku with my friend this summer and I'm looking for an advice what to see & do. We are both outdoors people, and we like nature, hiking and history. Since our accommodation is already booked, we are going to stay in Hirosaki( 3 days), Akita ( 3 days), Morioka(2 days) and Sendai( 4 days). In Hirosaki there seems to be enough to see in the city itself: Castle, fujita garden, the samurai district. Shirakami area also looks awesome, but is it also accessible from Akita?...More

Journey to Shirakami Sanchi is shorter from Hirosaki and while going there don’t miss out the beautiful Juniko Lakes. Also along the Gono rail line is the scenic Senjojiki Coast and the Furo Fushi Onsen with spectacular ocean view. Daytime dip is possible but ideally it is best to spend a night there to take in the famous sunset view while enjoying the rotenburo. Other possible day trips from Hirosaki are the town of Aomori and one of the orchards/farms for the famous Aomori apples....More
