I went to Syokado Garden and Art Museum in Yawata city on a fine autumn day. There are some structures such as the hermitage called“Syokado”, a drawing room, three teahouses, an art museum, and a restaurant dotted in and around the garden covered with rocks, moss, bamboo groves, etc. I was able to hear the faint sound of “Suikinkutu”, a small sound making device hidden underground in the garden, through the bamboo tube standing on the ground.
A retired Buddhist monk built the hermitage at the foot of Mt. Otokoyama(2 kilometers north from the garden) in 1637 first. He named it “Syokado”(a pine and flower hall in a literal sense) and also called himself “Syokado Syojo(1584-1639)”. He was a master of the tea ceremony, calligraphy and painting. He used a cross-partitioned box, which was originally used for seeds case by nearby farmers, as a paints/tobaccos case.
Inspired by the Syojo’s use of a cross-partitioned box, the founder of some fancy Japanese restaurant started to use this type of box for a meal box and called it “Syokado Bento” around 1930s
I strolled in the garden without the bento because the garden’s entrance fee is much lower than the price of Syokado Bento at the restaurant in the garden.
