Now is the best season for walking here, if you like walking and relax. You still see cherry blossoms and historical tenmangu with not so many people.

I've been living in the Kansai area for three years, but I've never heard of this place. No one ever talked about it, but they should. I randomly stopped at Nagaokakyo Station and heard about it from the tourist information desk. I was amazed see how vast and well-kept the shrine grounds were. The architecture of all of the structures is fantastic, and the shopkeepers are friendly. The main attraction seems to be the lake, which features structures along its edges. On a sunny day, the scenery is breath taking. Great to take the family, or a date, even if you aren't religious.
This place is located not too far from Nagaokakyo Station. If you are tired of zigzagging through the crowds of central Kyoto, but want to visit a temple and/or take in some natural japanese scenery, then I recommend this place.

初めて行きましたがツツジが満開でした。赤のツツジが見事に咲いていて池の上のお散歩もとても日本を感じれます。

We happened to be in the area after visiting Suntory Beer Factory. Came here for a quick visit. Very quiet and peaceful. Saw quite a few locals coming by. Would be beautiful with fall colors.

After a few days in Kyoto, it's actually quite ordinary. However, it IS Kyoto and one of the nicest things about this city is that you turn a corner away from the traffic and hustle and bustle, into a little alley and suddenly there's an ancient shrine, which is a haven of peace and quiet. Sort of worth a visit if you have time.
