Kyushu has several scenic trains very convenient to tour around. Excellent structure and "bento" lunch box, you should get a JR Kyshu Pass (can get in Japan) to take advantage. Got this train right after Hayatono Kaze

Went the whole route from Kagoshima to kamamoto and then back on the Shinkansen. Great views from a quaint train that rattles across the tracks. First time I had ever been on a switchback rail system.

A regular JR pass should be gotten before arriving Japan. On the other hand, you can buy JR Kyshu pass in Japan (need a passport) and enjoy nice train as Hayato no Kaze, Isaburo, Tamatebako, Kawasemi & Yamasemi.
