A place of relaxation for Yamagata citizens, free of charge
Jul 2021
The site of Yamagata Castle, built during the reign of warlord Yoshiaki Mogami and the political seat of the Yamagata domain during the Edo period, is now a place of relaxation for Yamagata citizens. Except for the moat around the park, the Otemon gate, the Honmaru Goten plaza in the center of the park and the moats and historical sites surrounding it, the park is no different from other parks around the country, and is a place for joggers, pet walkers and children to play. Basically, the park is free and open to all, but the gates are closed at night and no one can enter. The west side of the park is also undergoing continuous maintenance and excavation, and some sections are restricted. The moat in the center of the park is only surrounded by a waist-high fence, which makes it difficult to retrieve balls and other objects that fall into the moat. Be careful when playing with balls or Frisbees.

It’s a short train ride from Yamadera to Yamagata. As the train approaches Yamagata, it passes by the Kajo Park and we got our first glimpse of what was to be a splendid array of sakura along the moat. It’s a short, 10 minute walk from the station to the park.

We spent the afternoon at Kajo Koen. It was perfect! Perhaps the best sakura of our 2017 spring trip. Similar to Chidorigafuchi in its splendor without all the tourists. The park is primarily level ground with an outer embankment planted with sakura. A few office and family hanami parties, a bridal shoot, and a pick-up game of baseball were going on in the park grounds. There was a small playground with a few swings and slides (and a most welcome toilet!) Mainly, folks were walking the ramparts under the tunnel of blossoming trees.

There was very little petal fall, although we did see several limbs on the ground, that had been broken off in full blossom, presumably by wind. The park was lovely - the trees stunning. Before we returned to our entry point at the south gate we came upon two gorgeous pink weeping sakura in full bloom with loads of tourists photographing the stunning trees.

We spent the morning at Yamadera - we didn't expect sakura there but wanted to visit Yamadera.

Yamadera in the morning, followed by Yamagata in the afternoon makes for a full - and very enjoyable - day trip from Sendai.

We arrived quite late at Yamagata, but fortunately this park was illuminated during sakura season and location is within walking distance from Yamagata Station. It was our first sakura experience, since we missed it in Tokyo, and even in Sendai. But glad we made it to Yamagata, because here the hanami was less crowded than in capital.

We went in from southern part of the park (near Kajo Central building) and found it to be less crowded. Walk through the path, and ended up in the main gate (Higashi Otemon, cmiiw).
I'm not familiar with different types/colours of sakura, but the petals of sakura trees here were predominantly white with slight pink hue.
The spacious hanami spot was somewhere around the main gate, nearby the neighbourhood road. But along the path within the park, there were some corners with bench where we can also relax while enjoying the sakura.

The castle ruins aren't much to see, but the park is a nice place to take a walk amid greenery and away from city streets. But don't miss the Saiseikan Museum. It was originally a hospital built in 1877 and it now houses medical supplies from various eras. But it's the building that's worth the visit as it was the first Western-style building in this part of Japan. I've never seen one in this style of architecture before. And entrance is free. There are pamphlets in both Japanese and English and free postcards.

About 650m from Yamagata station to the south bridge across the moat, Kajo Park is easy to get to. There is an elevated walkway around about 90% of the perimeter; it is in the shade and affords nice views across the moat to the local neighborhoods and inwards to the park. There are many feral cats in the park, some friendly and some shy. It's a great stroll around, and the restored east gate is historic and impressive.

A relatively short walk from Yamagata station, this park was the former site of Yamagata Castle. I jogged around this park (inside the park and outside the moat). Up along the top of the wall it's shady and when it was raining, the trees served as umbrellas. My wiffe and I also enjoyed strolling around the park, greeting others, and taking in a few historical sites. It's a nice place to spend a couple hours for sightseeing and also a nice place to revisit to relax and meet people. While we were there, there was significant construction going on in one section of the park--building a baseball field, I think.

We just loved this park. We were there for the full bloom of the cherry blossoms, and it was just glorious. It's bigger than it seems, with lots of beautiful paths lined with cherry blossoms. I'd imagine it's a lovely park in Summer and Autumn, as well.

We walked through here on our way to my friend’s flat and it was very pretty in the snow. Although there is very little of the castle left (and you can’t go inside), the bridge over the most is quite striking and there are a number of other buildings (sports grounds, museums, etc.) to visit too.

Every nearby museums and stores were close during new year (of course), but this castle gate still opened to let people walk through inside park with man-on-the-horse statue. Even there was no any other beautiful castle of building (except the old nearby tower-like museum, but it was close also), the view of completely white snow field with many dry big sakura tree was so serene and relax for me, especially the old black white stray cat of the park who liked to sunbath and dressing itself on the park bench, and very friendly to people. She let me played with her all the time, even I left, she still followed (and when other people came, she followed and requested them to cuddle too) So cute!
