It’s a little museum, located inside Yamagata Castle Park, north of Yamagata Station, about 13mins walk (1.1km)
Honestly, it was in our plan as it look like “just an old building. We decided to pay a visit while in the park, but it turned out to be a surprised.
It was originally a local hospital in the 1900s and the compound was beautiful . The museum displayed a lot of medical equipments and medical manual used in the old days. There are some old photos of the medical team and patients as well.
It’s free entry and definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.
Do drop me a message if need more info, and give me a thumbs up if you find the info useful. Thanks

Built in the late 1800's, by Japanese carpenters, this building is quite interesting. It was actually an early Western medical school.
The exhibits are kind of blah, unless one is into old medical instruments. But the building itself is cool. It's a lucky thing they decided to save and restore it.

This was an old hospital which is now a museum. They have some information on famous doctors and the history of medicine and some old medical equipment. The information is all in Japanese and the building itself is an interesting western looking circular building with a courtyard in the middle and a tower at the front

Kyodokan is the first State Hospital in Yamagata which based on western medical science. It has an interesting 2-storey wooden structure with European architecture. In the Kyodokan, they exhibit the medical tools and related medical documents used in early 20th century. Well of course you could admire how an hospital looks like in that era too.
It worth for an hour visit and it is adjacent to the Kajo Park.

We came upon this place, the former Saiseikan Hospital, as we strolled around Kajo Park. As it was free, we walked in, received an English brochure, took off our shoes, and went through the rooms on the first and second floors. Besides the brochure, there was nothing in English. Again, since it's conveniently located to Yamagata station and there are a couple other things to see in the park, it's worth an hour of your time (for everything in the park).

A beautiful building with a lovely garden in the middle. The exhibits cover medicine in Japan. I was most impressed by the eye chart that used animals.
