A great day trip into the mountains

After a nice visit to Sendai and Matsushima, we took the train to Yamadera. I highly recommend it. The train ride was pleasant and scenic. Our trip was in mid-October, and the leaves had slightly changed color. A later trip would be stupendous, with all the colored leaves. We took an early train so that we would arrive in the morning. There is only one train per hour. The air was fresh and clean. The mountains and river were beautiful. The town is easy to explore with several interesting shops selling handmade items. We bought exquisite kokeshi from the artist who made them. There is a public restroom across from the kokeshi shop. It was easy to find the beginning of the trail up the mountain, 1001 steps linking temples. It was a nice walk, with many places to stop and take pictures. There is a reasonable admission fee. They have umbrellas for sale or rent, if it is raining, and shops with souvenirs and freshly-made foods. We are in reasonable physical condition, but not athletes, and the walk was easy. We arrived at the top sooner than we expected. After going back down, though, our legs were a bit wobbly. A pair of rubber-tipped trekking poles would be a good idea for someone worried about the climb. People were really friendly, saying Hello (Konnichiwa) along the way. I would return to Yamadera any time, and perhaps make it a stop on the way to Yamagata and western Japan. In our case, we returned to Sendai after a nice half-day in Yamadera, and caught the shinkansen back to Tokyo.

Great---If One Likes Haiku

Basho is considered one of the best, if not the best, Haiku poet. If one is really, really interested in this art form, this museum is well worth a visit. If Haiku is not your thing, visiting the museum is basically not really worth the effort.

Nice side trip

The gardens around the memorial hall complements the trip to yamadera. You could get a great view of the temple from the gardens, very scenic on an autumn foliage.

Lots of steps, but worth the climb.

Loved this- easy to get to from Yamagata and well worth a few hours. Very quiet the day we went and glorious weather so we had great views. Not much in the village, and half of it was closed.
We were very lucky spotting an unusual wild animal in the bushes- apparently a serow. Very special, according the ticket lady.

If you like Basho, you should visit this little museum. And it's a nice change from all the temples. The museum is maybe 5-10min walking distance from the train station.
