The Zao Ropeway at the base of the Zao Onsen Ski Resort takes you directly up to the snow covered winter trees. Dress warm, expect shocking cold winds and big line-ups and crowds. On weekends especially they come in by the bus load to take selfies with the famous monsters.

These snow monsters are a wonder to see. We have skied in many places around the world but have never seen anything like these interesting “monsters” You can access them by the Zao Ropeway which is an enjoyable ride up the mountain. As long as it is fine and clear weather there is lots to see and photograph at the top. Of course you can ski down but you can also access them for non skiers. Didn’t go up at night but by all accounts this is a really wonderful experience as many of the structures are lit up. Make sure you venture up on a clear day!

Visited 1st march. 99% of the trees are now empty. Visibility was low. Still a very nice spot to visit.

As most of the ski area is below the tree line, the frost covered trees 🌲 form a picturesque landscape in the ski resort of Zao Onsen.

While the snow monsters (actually trees fully encased in snow/frost, and quite beautiful, the tendency of the mountain top to be encased in cloud means that they are not always visible. Advice we got was to the effect if there's a glimmer of sun, get up there! We did that twice, and by the time we were at the top (the restaurant is not too bad) the cloud had come back in, and the monsters were but dim shapes. Photography wasn't superb, but a couple are "recoverable".

Even if you're not skiing it's worth a trip to the top of the mountain to see the snow monsters. In many years of skiing I've never seen trees so completely covered in snow, to the extent it's hard to believe they're really trees. It would be fun if you were travelling with children to imagine what the shapes were. Some creepy mummies, some birds and animals.

After many attempts over the years we finally saw them. It was well worth it . Unfortunately the weather was a shocker with visibility down to a minimum. Be prepared for the weather to change quickly unless it is a clear sunny day. Great skiing as well coming down from the top & great views. Very popular for non skiers just going to the top to check them out. Highly recommend to do for something a little different.

the snow monster is one of the spectacular view in the earth. yamagata zao is a must visit once in a life time.the best time to get the snow monster is mid feb to mid march. its really cold. even its a bit far from tokyo, its a worth trip do do. this is popular among local but not for international traveller. for muslim, there is a halal cafe on the foothill before the cable car station.

The Snow Monsters are an unusual sight and visiting them is a fun thing to do if it is a good day. The cable car takes you to the top of Zao mountain and at 1660m it is cold! It was -15*C when we visited so wrap up well and take sunglasses. The view over Yamagata from that vantage point is amazing.
Throughout February and on several other dates they have an illumination event (17:00 - 21:00) with the final ride up at 19:50.
Zao is also a popular ski resort so it is a busy place.

Great place to see if you visit Sendai and Zao. Never seen a view like this. It is easy to take cable car to reach the top of mountain. If you know how to ski or snowboarding, all the way down, the view is unbelievable during the sunny day.
