The Zao Ropeway at the base of the Zao Onsen Ski Resort takes you directly up to the snow covered winter trees. Dress warm, expect shocking cold winds and big line-ups and crowds. On weekends especially they come in by the bus load to take selfies with the famous monsters.

These snow monsters are a wonder to see. We have skied in many places around the world but have never seen anything like these interesting “monsters” You can access them by the Zao Ropeway which is an enjoyable ride up the mountain. As long as it is fine and clear weather there

Visited 1st march. 99% of the trees are now empty. Visibility was low. Still a very nice spot to visit.

As most of the ski area is below the tree line, the frost covered trees 🌲 form a picturesque landscape in the ski resort of Zao Onsen.

While the snow monsters (actually trees fully encased in snow/frost, and quite beautiful, the tendency of the mountain top to be encased in cloud means that they are not always visible. Advice we got was to the effect if there's a glimmer of sun, get up there! We did that twice,
