The fact that this area was once a training base for kamikaze pilots to be trained and had now been turned into a peace museum made it all the more significant and poignant in my eyes. The gardens near to the museum were well manicured...More

This is a Peace Museum dedicated to the Kamikaze pilots. The goal is to put names and faces to those that fought so nothing like this happens again. It was sobering to find that many of the pilots were children, ages 15-19. What were you...More

Those of us from countries who fought against Japan in WWII have sometimes heard of the feared kamikaze pilots. During that war and immediately after, the kamikazes seemed to provide evidence of how different the Japanese were from "us". Experiencing this museum makes you aware...More

Chiran is located in the inland less than forty kilometers south along Satsuma Peninsular from Kagoshima City, and is now part of Minami Kyuushuu City. Chiran was a castle township in the Edo era ruled by a subordinate of the Shimazu Family. During WWII, it...More

Well presented museum. Would recommend taking a Japanese speaker with you to help translate things like the pilots' last letters they wrote to their families before departing, etc. There is a zero fighter that has been brought up from the bottom of the pacific which...More

interesting museum enroute to ibusuki from kagoshima. it is a paid entrance museum, its quite small but educational. video screening and some artefacts eg letters to their loved ones, makes one ponder... what really went through their minds when they did that?

We had visited most of the War (Peace) Museums in Japan, and this was the last one on our list. We found that the museum was more of a memorial to the pilots than the other museums which we had visited. There were no photos...More

There's a lot here to talk about depending on what you think about kamikaze pilots. I did not pay to use the English audio, and like others have said, maybe I should have as there might have been more background to the story. There could...More

So shocked and found new things in this place. Chiran is such a beautiful small town but it was Kamikaze pilots base. That makes Chiran town makes more sad ironically. From Kagoshima chuo station, there is bus, it costs about 1000yen(1 and 30 hours). If...More

we were driving south toward ibusuki and stumbled upon a "nice looking" building (and spotted a sign "samurai residences") so we decided to return the next day to visit. Chiran Peace museum is right at the end (short drive away), and on our way we...More
