When you enter the street containing all the residences you'll probably be halted by an old lady on the corner asking you for the 500 yen entry fee (for adults). We never had to show our tickets anywhere and my guess is if you enter...More

These garden have been great and amazing when they were completed. Now they are poorly kept and you as a visitor are not welcome even though they gladly accept your money. I do not recommend you to go there.

We were on an organised trip with a guide and after a short walk from the bus car park we visited a number of gardens and houses that belonged to old Samurai families. The background and history surrounding the area was informative and they even...More

This area used to be residents for Samuri but now regular people live here. Some are kind enough to open their gardens to the public. The gardens aren’t overly large, but the high hedges, trimmed to resemble mountains, and the different kinds and shapes of...More

These are actually 250-year old Samurai houses from the Edo period of Japanese history. Some of the actual Samurai descendents still live in the houses. The gardens are immaculate and beautifully laid out and worth a good stroll on a blue-sky day. The Peace Museum...More

This area of well-preserved samurai residences has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. We visited the gardens in really bad weather, as there was a typhoon nearby and most tourists seemed to have cancelled their trips to Chiran. The Samurai Gardens are not a must see in Chiran, but if you have the time, enjoy a lovely stroll...More

I went here from Kagoshima. There is a bus at bay number East 16 at the bus station outside Kagoshima Chuo station that takes you to the Samurai Houses (Bukeyashiki-iriguchi) stop. Look for the bus with the destination "Chiran, Peace Museum (Tokko Kannon)". Bus signs...More

We love this place. The "garden" is in fact a collection of old houses where samurai lived here long time ago. We drove but we believe you can take a bus to come here from Ibusuki or Kagoshima. There is a ticket office to buy...More
