Temple 88 of the 88 Buddhist Temple Pilgrimage
Apr 2018 • Friends
When I first did the 88 Buddhist Temple Pilgrimage it was on a "reverse year" where you start at 88 and work your way down to 1. The act of going in reverse is supposed to bring good fortune, as you have a chance of meeting the great Kobo Daishi (Kukai) on the path. This temple is simply astonishing, and a must-see for visitors to Kagawa. Here you can witness the "finish line" where many pilgrims have come to complete the circle of their long arduous walk around the entire circumference of Shikoku.

The temple itself is simply magical, and the temple roofs against the backdrop of the hills and trees is simply stunning. Take as long as you can to look around, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy. So, whether you are at the end of your own personal pilgrimage, or at the very beginning, you will surely find this temple inspiring.

Magical setting
Jan 2015
Okuboji is the final temple in the 88-temple pilgrimage of Shikoku Island. It is a fitting conclusion, though worth visiting even if you have not gone to the others. Be sure to note the hundreds of offerings from pilgrims, most popular is to leave the staff used while making the circuit of the temples. Many claim that the temple has extraordinary healing abilities.
Okuboji is deep in the mountains, surrounded by old forests. The main temple has a backdrop of a rocky crag which is very impressive. I have been several times, but most highly recommend the fall when the tree leaves are fiery orange and red. It was also spectacular with a dusting of snow in the winter. No matter when you go, be sure to take a camera for fantastic photo opportunities.
