The weathered stone leading up to the temple, as well as the incredible views from the top, make this a wonderful walking/hiking location. The pine and cedar trees are all around, and whether you catch the site in the morning or evening it will blow you away. The temple itself is of considerable historical importance. It was built in the 17th century, but stands on the mausoleum of Emperor Sutoku, which was established in 1414. There is a legend that a wizened mystic appeared and admonished the priests there that they were on holy ground, and that this is the place from which a state of super consciousness (samdhi) is to be reached and dharma (cosmic law and order) can be touched.

Shiromine-ji is one of the temples on the 88-temple pilgrimage of Shikoku. It is not the most memorable, but is quite pretty. There are many different buildings and stone stairs which are extremely picturesque, so bring a camera. One of the best parts is the views of Kagawa and the Inland Sea on the drive up the mountain to the temple. I would not recommend this temple as a single destination, but it is worth a trip if you are interested in the 88-temple pilgrimage. Be sure to visit Negoro-ji which is very close by.

There are many halls and towers in the grounds, and it is a fairly good temple. It is a Shingon sect temple of the Omuro school, and the main deity is the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva. The temple has a distinctive mountain gate, the "Shichi-mune Gate" with five tiled roofs. It is a historic pilgrimage temple with a close connection to Emperor Sutoku. Because the approach to the temple grounds was under construction, the 13-story stone pagoda, which is usually located where cars and buses pass, can be viewed on foot this time, but this time it is possible to take your time to see it. Instead, you will have to walk a long way from the bus parking lot. The Imperial Envoy Gate at the entrance to Tonsho-ji Hall, which enshrines Emperor Sutoku, has a plaque hanging on the gate that is written by Emperor Gokomatsu, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. It is said to have been founded by Kukai and his nephew, Chisho Daishi.
