The Tenrikyo sect, revealed to Miki Nakayama in October of 1838 has grown to more than three and a half million world wide members. Its purpose is to teach the Joyous Life to all of mankind. The city of Tenri was established by the sect and includes not only the central sanctuary and headquarters, but dorms for adherents both local and visiting, elementary and secondary schools, and a major hospital. A visit to the unadorned sanctuary is worth the short train ride.

This is a unique location; the home of the Tenrikyo church, a new religion with ties to the ancient Japanese faith, Shintoism. Very friendly people and the temple is always open. This is the start of the Yamanobe no Michi trail, so if you're looking for a guide to that pathway may I recommend "The Poets' Realm; Japan's Oldest Road," recently published on Amazon.

Tenrikyo religion's influence in the area is very noticeable. All the architecture has a similar style/look to it. Across from the actual church, the University, the high school all highlight the same roofline.
The main building is huge. Photos cannot truly capture the size of this building. It is quite awesome.
Parishioners are all over the place, you can identify these people by their black smocks with characters written on the back.
This is not a must-see or a must-go destination to plan for. However, if you are in the neighborhood anyway, it isn't a bad way to kill a bit of time.
