As a Goldfish Breeder I have always wanted to visit The Goldfish Museum in Koriyama and finally managed to get it arranged.when I visited Japan on holiday. I had contacted the owner in advance to arrange a behind the scenes tour..
Although there were less varieties on display in the museum than I had expected there were still enough to show the diversity of goldfish varieties. It was interesting to see a range of Ranchu varieties whereas in U.K. we only recognise one type of Ranchu.
All the information on the Goldfish artefacts are in Japanese with no English translations. This was disappointing as there was a range of information available including the work of Yoshlichi Matsui a scientist who had carried out a variety of research on Goldfish keeping.
I found the behind the scenes tour of the fish farm very interesting and informative.
I was also lucky that on the day of my visit there was also a Bristol Shubunkin show being held in the town and I was invited to attend.
This also allowed me to see the Koriyama Telephone Fish Tank which was really impressive.
Overall this was an extremely interesting visit for a Goldfish enthusiast.
