This is one of alternative from Shimabara to Kumamoto, by car it will takes 3-4 hrs.
Due to the weather with nice so we can take ferry from Shimabara Port to Kumamoto port it takes 45mins
on Ferry the most funny thing is you can feed the birds ( Sea gull ) and only in November and December
the food you can buy from port shop or ferry particular the moment when sea gull picks up the food from your hand.

Normally you can drive your car or bus(with tourist) into this ferry , very convenience for the tourist. and the Deluxe Ferry looks nice and comfortable. and nice view with Volcano.

Ariake Ferry is the most convenience way for self-drive travellers travel from Shimabara to Kumamoto. It's advisable to book in advance during peak seasons, but in low season, it's ok to just go to the ferry terminal to buy the tickets. The ferry is able to take quite a numbers of cars / buses at it's lower deck. Passengers can leave their cars after it's properly parked inside the ferry. The middle & upper deck have lots of seats for passengers to rest. There's also shops selling food & beverage. The fantastic part is at the open area of upper deck where you can find lots of sea-gulls flying. There are many people feeding sea-gulls. Sea-gulls food can be purchased at the ferry for 100yen / pack.

Traveled to Kumamoto using this ferry. There is a lot of sceneries to enjoy during the trip. Can buy bread to feed the seagulls along the way. The sea gulls will just simply hover over the ferry and once they see the bread, they will fly towards it and catch them! Amazing experience!

This is one way to get from Shimabara to Kumamoto (or the other way around), if you dont want to take the train all the way around or drive. The ferry takes around 45 Minutes.

You will get some amazing views over Mt. Unzen in the background, and on clear days you can even see the smoke from the vulcano.

The seagulls is just amazing, and if you have something that looks like food in you hand, they will grab it. So be aware of this.

It takes around 30 minutes with bus from the ferry terminal in kumamoto to the train station. So I might recommend to take a taxi as this will only use a 10 minutes.

At the Shimabare side is the bus station right outside the terminal, as well as just a few minutes walk to the train station that will take you around to most places.

Efficient ferry service connecting Nagasu on the main island, and Taira on the Unzen Peninsula. The journey was smooth, and it was fun feeding the seagulls that follow the ferry as it crosses the strait.

Note that you are driving, the ticket office for vehicles is not at the main ferry building itself, but is a small one at the entrance to the loading area (use Google Maps).

we went with Kumamoto ferry from Kumamoto to Shimabara. One way for the car is about 3700 Yen. An additional adult 1900 Yen (round trip). So for a family it's quite expensive, but saves driving time as ferry is a bit less than 1h. Service at departure port is very good and loading works quickly. Nice seating on board and snacks/drinks are available to buy.
On the way back, we changed the ferry to go one ferry earlier and cancellation/new booking worked perfectly and with no charge. Good service!
