竹田城跡の下山に表米神社登山道を下り表米神社におまいりしました。下山道は案内に急な坂道と階段と書いてある通り、少々しんどいコースでした。ご祭神は、表米宿禰命で、 旧村社とのことです。境内の参道横の小広場に相撲桟敷が設けられています。これは他では見たことのないものでした。

相撲の土俵があり、観客用の席のようなものもありました。地味な神社ですが、ここから見下ろす川沿いの桜や向かいにある立雲峡がきれいでした。

竹田城からの下りに立ち寄りました。
登りは駅裏登山道を利用したので、下りは別ルートというだけの理由です。
下り木道階段の最終地点に境内があり、その中に半円形石積段型桟敷がある相撲座敷がありました。
町歌舞伎が開かれていそうな、舞台も設けられていました。
この神社を見れただけでも、下りも歩きで良かったと思えた場所でした。

この神社には相撲桟敷があります。土俵の周りには石積桟敷があります。珍しいです。この神社から竹田城の登り口があります。かつての登常口でしょう。

竹田城跡へは徒歩で登ることができ、主なコースは２つ。その一つが「表米神社」の参道から入るコースです。駅から徒歩で約５分。町にすっかり溶け込んだ鳥居から参道が上へと伸びています。７世紀。新羅が来寇した際に、討伐にあたった表米宿彌命を祀る由緒のある神社。芸能を愛したとも言われ、境内には土俵や歌舞伎の舞台もあります。訪問時期は１１月。色づいた木々が境内を染め、華やかな感じがしました。竹田城跡は登る際には、ぜひ立ち寄られてはいかがでしょう？参道から見下ろせば、山間に佇む竹田の町の空気を身近に感じる事もできますよ。

情報館 天空の城で聞いた道だ。城下町の一番左側に鳥居があり、急な階段を登ると表米神社が正面にある。その左脇に土を踏み固めた道があり、獣除けの柵を通ると先程より急な階段がある。そこが竹田城址へ行く近道なのだそうだ。距離はないが相当きつい。表米神社の境内にはシートに覆われた土俵があった。小さく素朴な神社だ。
