About
Yanagi-yu is said to ensure the fertility and safe childbirth for woman. Yanagi is Japanese for weeping willow, and gets its name from the willow lined street that runs in front of the Yanagi-yu. This is a cozy bath house. The interior is a classic twist on modern-Japanese style. The rustic wooden interior, from the walls to the bath made from cypress, provide a warm and relaxing experience.

This onsen is one of the smaller ones but it has the benefit of being open until 11pm. I went at around 8pm and it was myself and tow others, so not crowded at all. For sure it is one of the hotter onsens, but I like that. The idea is not to be in there too long anyway. Good hot soak for 5 mins, bowl of cold water too cool down, another 5 mins soak and a final bowl to cool down. In and out in under 30 mins ...... a very pleasant visit.

Hi stephpr, Thank you for your "onsen tour" posts! They are sure to be beneficial for future visitors in Kinosaki. We're glad to hear that you had a great time, and hope to see you back in Kinosaki again one day.

Perhaps the space seems a little small, so it felt rather crowded. We were there during around 5pm, right before dinner hours so I guess that is when most people would have checked into their rooms and were heading out of a bath session before dinner time. The baths were indeed hot. Located along the Otani River. There is also a small ashiyu (foot bath) at the entrance.

Dear AliciaCLPhang, Thank you very much for your comment. We are sorry to know that you couldn’t have a relaxing time at Yanagi-yu. It is the smallest public bath in Kinosaki Onsen. The walls and bath tub are made from cypress wood and they are supposed to provide a light fragrance and relaxing experience. We appreciate your view which makes us understand the situation. We look forward to seeing you again.

This onsen was really beautiful, though my wife found it a little small, leaving no room to escape the other guests. It also didn't feel entirely friendly towards westerners, nothing specific, just an odd feeling.

Yanagi yu has a beautiful entry with big beams but inside it is actually quite small. The bath is extremely hot, perhaps the hottest one of all 7 in Kinosaki. I didn't last longer than 5minutes. Don't go there if you have a weak heart. Rather enjoy the foot bath just outside the building

This is the hottest (by far) bathhouse in Kinosaki. Truly for those who are brave of mind and body and who don't mind coming out looking like a cooked lobster. Scorching hot water prevents you from staying there too long. It's a small bathhouse and can get crowded easily.

I think they must know their reputation because unlike the other bathhouses which leave their souvenir stamps outside their door (for you to stamp your tourist booklet - ask your ryokan for one), they put theirs inside the bathhouse at the end of a hallway. it's as if only those who have proven their worth can prove that they actually frequented this location. If you like super hot water, this is for you. If not - skip.

I was disappointed with Yangi yu after going there the first night. It doesn’t look or feel like a Japanese hot spring. There is only one pool and it is only slightly bigger than the ryokan I stayed. It is supposed to be a public bath house. The locker room is small relative to the others. The hot tub has no steam when you walked in.. However the water was boiling hot. I wasn’t able to soak too long. Definitely skip this one if you don't have much time in town.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. It did seem like the people there were in a rush to get in and out, but the people working there weren't particularly encouraging that.
I went in for free due to staying at a local ryokan.
