About
The "D. Fernando II e Glória" Museum Centre consists of two historical war ships of the Portuguese Navy - a frigate and a submarine, open to visitors, in Cacilhas - Almada. "D. Fernando II e Gloria" Frigate is a wood sailing ship of the Portuguese Navy. She is one of the oldest ships in the world, in a dry dock of the river tagus. A one of a kind experience, full of adventures and treasures to find, understand what it was to be a sailor and every part and object of the ship that was the last sailing ship of the Portuguese Navy that connected Europe and Asia! "Barracuda" was a diesel-electric submarine, post 2nd World War technology, serving the Portuguese Navy from 1968 to 2010. During this period of active service, Barracuda sailed 3.090 days, equalling 52.622 hours of navigation, of which 35.795 hours dived (68,1%), totalling 263.358 NM (the equivalent of 12 times around the globe), of which around 180.000 NM dived.

- ArtsyGalBaltimore895 contributionsFor an interesting glance into the past naval history and a short trip outside of Lisbon, visit the D. Fernando Il e Gloriga Frigate. Clear, concise documentation throughout the visit leads one into the past history. There are multiple mannequins engaged in daily life to support the story line (and I must admit quite an array of characters!). I think people of all ages can enjoy this visit. A French submarine dry docked next to the frigate should be also available for a tour soon.Thank you for visiting us and for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed it. - Voyager60030696822Lisbon, Portugal2 contributionsIt is very well organized and has fun games during the visit. They could also set up a site for donations to the museum. Another cool thing would be to have audio of conversations between the sailors and sounds of the ocean, as if we were on the high seas.Muito obrigado pela visita e pela apreciação. - Marlene G1 contributionThe visit was spectacular, as the organization of the space very well cared for, marked and the Military ticket shop very friendly. I recommend the visit being beneficial to remember our history and the experience aboard the Marines. Thank you Fragata D. Fernando II and Gloria.Muito obrigado pela visita e pela apreciação. - Wander543585042971 contributionExcellent visit. Very good restoration. I took very good pictures. The view is great. This is an excellent testimony to what was the "carrier of the Indies". The various explaining panels acud to perceive the operation of the fragate.Muito obrigado pela visita e pela apreciação. - Lieuwe RGroningen Province, The Netherlands577 contributionsNicely refurbished Portuguese frigate. Nice to be able to see some of the decks and get a little insight into what life on board must have been like. Next to it is the submarine Barracuda, also worth seeing, if only because they left all the buttons, switches and devices. Not mother's most beautiful, hence the name, but certainly nice to visit.Thank you for your visit and feedback. - Jo ASt. Albans, United Kingdom17 contributionsWe found the submarine fascinating. You get a proper feel for life on board. And you can look through the periscope to the old Centre of Lisbon on other side of water. The boat was also great. Definitely a good few hour trip getting the ferry across and a lovely seafood lunch.Thank you for visiting us and for your feedback. If you love old ships or naval history this is must visit for you when being in Almada. It is the last entirely wooden sailing ship of the Portuguese Navy and the last “Nau” of the “Carreira da Índia”, the connection between Portugal and India. It set out on its maiden voyage in 1845 from Goa to Lisbon. In 1960's the Frigate caught a great fire, which left it almost drowned in the river Tejo until its restoration started in 1990's. Now is open to the public as a museum. From top deck you walk down on steep wooden stairs 3 decks more. And there is lot to see about the life of sailors of that time. Worth to visit - the entry fee for seniors was Eur 2.50.

Wonderful experience, the child had a lot of fun, the reconstructions with mannequins were beautiful. Interesting for adults with explanations of the objects and life on board. It's a shame that it is little advertised on social media, rarely mentioned in things to see in Lisbon, found on the web almost by accident

This 19th-century frigate was restored from near complete ruin to its former glory, and now is decaying again. It used to have full masts and rigging and it sported a decent paint job; now the masts have been sawn off and the whole thing looks drab. Inside there are far too many plaques referring to recent events, "His Excellency this and that", when the focus should be on recreating the atmosphere of the past. There is still stuff to be learnt here, but it's fast becoming a depressing experience.

The guided visit is excellent. Fun and interactive. Kids (aged 10-4) loved it and so did the adults. It takes about an hour and a half but we’ve all learned a lot and kids had a great time. It’s really worth it for a family friendly visit, away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon

This was an unexpected treat! We were visiting Cachilas from downtown Lisboa and saw the ship from the ferry port. It was a fun visit and well designed for people to learn about the ship and how it was used. Definitely recommended for anyone interested in history!

We really enjoyed our "tour" of the frigate. It is self guided with a nice printed visit guide ( for an additional 1 euro, but worth it). The layout of the tour was set up well and easy to understand and appreciate what it was like to be on a ship in the 1800s. We had a blast. And there are several wonderful restaurants nearby (especially if you like seafood!). It was a fun afternoon of lunch and ship!

A very interesting visit from a historical point of view. With good explanations, and recreated scenes. Good to go with the family, so that the bailiffs can better understand what they learn in manuals about Portuguese navigation. We recommend!

This is a beautifully restored frigate and well worth the inexpensive and quick crossing to cacilhas. Well worth visit, but be aware it is shut on Mondays.

The ship could be overlooked when coming to visit The main attraction in Almada but I think it is worth looking for. The ship has been restored to a very high standard and we very much enjoyed reading about the history.

Nothing Special, 15 minutes you have seen it all, with children, it brings you back in time, it is clean and tidy but not a lot to do or see. I have nothing more to say, 10 minutes with the ferry from Lisbon, 15 minutes visit and then 10 minutes back...That is all !
