    Not another sight seeing place
It's a place of spiritual connection and for one's looking to evolve themselves beyond. For those who are sheerly visiting as a sightseeing tourist, this place is bound to disappoint you. Take time to read and understand the significance of this place before your visit. Make sure you visit the Information Centre. Be ready to walk. The place provides for shuttles, and seniors may need extra care.

Quick 3 days retreat at Auroville
We went for a quick 3 days retreat to Auroville , stayed at one of the official guest houses listed on their website and visited the Matrimandir inside Auroville. It’s such a beautiful place and very very organised , right from car park to the visitors Center to the different exhibitions within, ample parking , drinking water, rest areas , shades. Enjoyed the walk to the center. Also lot of boutiques and small cages within to get refreshed after the walk

Very Distant view and costly parking charges
The place is very big. You have to walk for a long distance to see the view point. Only the outer chamber can be seen. For the inner chamber, you need to book it in their website well advance which we are not aware of. To come back from the view point to car parking, either you have to walk back the long distance or wait for a long time for their bus service. Parking charges are very high

    Great Experience
I spent more that a month working as a volunteer in Autoville, and my experience was excellent. A great place to open up your mind, get inspired, and meets lots of interesting people: living there and visitors like me. Always looking forward to come back.

Good for a Relaxing Walk Through the Greenery
It is best if one stays for a day or two in Auroville. One might not enjoy it much as a day tour spot. I visited the place just for the day and enjoyed the walk through the forests to reach the Matrimandir view point. Honestly, I did not like the view of the Matrimandir that much but I loved the walk. The walk was through the green forest with most of the path having ample shade. They purposely made the path to reach the viewpoint long as that path passed through several of their exhibitions. The return path was shorter and more beautiful. It was a forest trail and had very less people as most people travelled back via the free bus. It feels bad to see that even young people were not able to handle the few kilometres of walk on plain level. After leaving Auroville it is advisable to take the detour and visit some of the cafes of the place a few kilometres away.

We took an auto from Pondy White Town (return gate INR 800 including 2 hour wait) to visit Auroville. Not worth the effort of a visit just to see a building/monument (Matrimandir) from afar. There were a lot of JCB diggers around the Matrimandir so it was dusty at the viewing point. One could not go inside the building, apparently you have to book at least a week in advance - so got the impression that it was open to a privileged few!

There were hundreds of visitors when we were there, many just wandering around looking, or shopping (yes, there is a whole little 'village' of shops selling inexpensive clothing, jams, candles, incense, spices and souvenirs) who I doubt really learned much of Auroville's special history or meaning. But we had pre-arranged a guided tour of two+ hours, and that made all the difference in learning how this little independent part of India came to be, how it is run and managed and how its citizens work together to ensure its continued existence. One might call it a 'religious socialism' where the binding premise is acceptance of all people, all faiths, united for certain commonalities while emphasizing perfection of oneself in ways that benefit not only oneself but all of mankind. A fascinating place to visit intelligently.

Unless you've planned to go to the Matrimandir for the day (and booked a slot in advance) or staying for a short stay there; I didn't see the point of going to Auroville for a few hours to see the structure from far away.
Plus, the location is remote with not many transport options but renting a motorbike or an auto (the price of the latter being overly inflated).
I would advise to spend your time visiting something else in or around Pondicherry.

Went on a Sunday. Took us an hour to commute the final 1-2 kms. If the authorities knew about the crowds, would have expected them to do better traffic management. Sufficient parking space within Auroville but the approach definitely needs tremendous improvement.

The Matrimandir viewing point is a 15 min walk from the parking area. Rs 100 charge for parking but no charge for visiting the Matrimandir. The crowd was crazy! Would definitely suggest to avoid weekends. The viewing point offers a great view of the Temple. You can visit the Temple only if you are staying at Auroville or are associated with them.

There are other things to see in Auroville, but we gave those a miss because of the crowd.

A must visit place when visiting Pondicherry. The place is a tribute to nature and harmony and one can see their various teachings when going from visitor’s Center to the Matrimandir viewing platform. There is a free bus service to bring you back to the parking from the viewing platform. Well maintained and good experience.

A real waste of part of a day, we left thinking what a waste of time. Can’t understand why it’s on a tour. If anyone visits the area I’d give this a very wide birth. Only excitement was our guide was nearly in a collision with a lady on a motorcycle that’s as good as it gets.
