Stunning place on an island.
Loved the fact you have to go by boat, it add something...
In addition to this very historical and special place, you'll find some dear, which is something really sweet :-D
Don't be afraid to get off your shoes in order to be closer to the shrine.
Go in the morning to have the shrine not too crowded

A gorgeous shrine right on the centre of the town in Miyajima with great views of the bay and the floating O-Tori. Built in the 6th century originally this version dates from the 12th. Coloured mostly in the traditional bright orange and made mostly of native cedar, it's a lovely place to walk through. Its tranquil and absorbing. Loved the display of ceremonial drums
Great views too of the nearby 5 storied pagoda and there's some gorgeous stonework and statuary, mostly of fierce looking guardians! There's a nice central shrine with a pier overlooking the O-Tori.
A truly beautiful place and very, very inexpensive at 300 yen for adults.

Itsukushima is one of the most important temples in Japan. It is also very popular with visitors and you can enter it but be advised it can get very crowded. If you decide to stay and admire it from the outside, it is especially stunning in high tide.

This shrine is really worth visiting. The day we visited a Japanese couple were getting married. There are plenty of photo opportunities of the Torii gate & pagoda from hear.

If you flew in to Hiroshima and went straight over to Miyajima this would be a great temple and shrine to visit, unfortunately I came here via Kyoto so it was another shrine and temple combination, they are all excellent but they do get samey, a bit like churches in England.

Very impressive and grand shrine at Miyajima, entrance is 300 yen but you can buy a combined ticket for other attractions which will reduce the cost most tour groups have this included in standard tour. Really nice to wander round the rooms although the route is laid out and access to the various rooms is generally not allowed

By far one of the ever-lasting memories that we leave Japan with; the natural beauty and history of Miyajima Island and the many shrines located there is a must to experience.

It is very easy getting there - From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (26minutes). Then, take the ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima Pier (10 minutes). Total travel time: approximately 40 minutes.

After you have enjoyed touring the shines and temples, head on down to Omote-Sando; it's the main street from the port for some souvenir shopping and then enjoy a great meal of local seafood, especially the bbq oysters before heading back to Hiroshima.

One of the things to look out for though are the many deer that wander the streets, if you've got food in you pocket or bag, they will find it and chew...
