Making Manju
May 2019 • Friends
My sister and I heard that you could learn how to make manju (a sweet cake filled with a sweet filling) for about $8.00. When we went inside after disembarking from the ferry, we asked when the next class was. They said we could make manju right then. We went upstairs, put on an apron, and was directed to a row of manju mold machines. A nice man showed us a diagram of the process; oil the mold, place a scoop of batter inside, place either a bit of sweetened bean paste or chocolate in the batter, close the mold. We then would rotate the mold for even cooking. We made four manju each. Then we placed them in a machine that packaged them in cellophane. They were delicious! There were also beautiful local handicrafts for sale in the downstairs shop.

Very interesting

Three floors which are all very interesting. The ground floor has traditional crafts such as woodcarving. The second floor you can try making cakes and on the top floor you can try carving a scoop.

Learning a Traditional art
Jun 2018 • Friends
We went to the Miyajima Traditional Craft Centre and booked a Momiji Manju Making class for approx. 750 Yen per person...not only were we shown how to make them under instruction, and wrap them, but we also got to take our cakes with us -4 and were given an extra one as a souvenir. We could also book a class in the other traditional crafts - Shakushi & Bori making.
