Good place for momiji manju
Oct 2019
After the overcrowded streets closer to the shrine, it was a relief to walk down this street, where we found some good momiji manju (leaf shaped bean sweets). You can get them elsewhere on the island, but we could sit down in the quiet and enjoy them here. Pro-tip: the "skins-on" version is better.

Quiet old street
Nov 2015 • Couples
One of the oldest streets in town, Takinokoji connects the Itsukushima Shrine with Daisho-in. It’s relatively quiet in the day with fewer crowds since most people walk in the touristy market streets. It’s peaceful at night after all the day-trippers have deserted the island, but then all streets are peaceful at night!

There are a few marked buildings here but we weren’t able to read the Japanese signage. After some research, we learned that one building we photographed is Syokei Yashiki Residence, the home of the Hayashi family, priests for Itsukushima Shrine. Many of the other buildings are private residences or small shops; there is a small shrine there as well.

At the Daisho-in end of the street there’s a small shop where the owner has lovely plantings inside the window in pots and outside in window boxes. Every trip, whether in autumn or spring, we stop to admire her plants and she greets us with a warm smile. Very nice!

Old Town
Apr 2016 • Couples
This small alley is what remains of the old style buildings and oldest part of the town on the island. The architecture is wprth a brief visit as you walk behind the Itsukushima shrine.

Here we can see the picture of how the past lives on this island, the architecture of the existing house.

The alley from back of Itsukushima Shrine to Diashoin Temple. It has the oldest townscape of Miyajima with local residents, ryokan and historical houses such as Syokei Yashiki Residence.
