About
Kamotsuru Sake Brewing is located in the center of Hiroshima Prefecture in Saijo, Higashi-Hiroshima City. The area is the perfect setting to brew good sake: clean and pure air, rich subsoil water, and a surrounding area of rice production. Today, there are seven sake breweries in a small area of Saijo. At the Kamotsuru visitor center, you can enjoy tasting and shopping after learning all about sake through some exhibits and panels.

We had to get our own way to Higashihoshima, which was quite easy by train.
We had a wonderful guide who spoke very clear English and very knowledgeable.
We visited 4 brewery's all very different and unique in there on way.
Also had a lovely lunch of traditional food of the area which was very yummy.
Afterwards we went to a cafe and had a drink to sober us up, but we stayed over time chatting because we were in great company.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend this company, you cant go wrong.

I visited this brewery as part of a walk around the Saijo sake district which is a 36 minute train ride from Hiroshima City. It's a perfect off the beaten track half day adventure only a couple of minutes walk from Saijo train station. Aside from the sake breweries there are a few shrines and restaurants in the area that can also be enjoyed.
Out of the breweries in the area Kamotsuru is the largest and best set up for sampling sake with some nice photo opportunities in and around the brewery itself.
There are a large range of sake to suit most palates including their own unique sparkling sake. Signage is both in Japanese and English, out of all the breweries I've visited in Japan this has the best in regards to showing the taste, type and even the temperature the sake should be enjoyed at. The sampling is self service with small disposable cups. I'm not sure if the staff spoke English as they were busy at the time but you should be fine should you not speak Japanese. If you go to the back off the brewery you can fill up your water bottles with the water the brewery uses to make it's sake, you will often find the locals doing this to use it for cooking.
As you pass through the ticket gates at Saijo station there is a Tourist information office opposite the convenience store and next to the escalators. You can ask them for a map and guide of the area.

Who knew to visit a sake brewery in Hiroshima. Do explore things and places apart from the war memorials. This was unexpectedly good. We like visiting various breweries to sample as well as to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the spirits. Each brewery has its unique elements. Spend an enjoyable afternoon getting lost in the breweries! Bring some home if you have alcohol allowance.

The brand new museum is located in a more spacious and remodeled part of the brewery complex. The exhibits are well curated some with bilingual signage, and the video viewing area has been expanded. There is a shop that sells their products and an opportunity to taste some of the brands, and then towards the exit there is a sample of the pure mountain spring water that is used for their wines, even a chance to take home some of the water for free in your water bottles. It's a must visit if one wants to understand the time revered process of wine making and for learning about town history. Kampai!

Kamotsuru is the biggest and most professional sake brewery we visited in Saijo. On the one hand great because there is a lot on display to teach visitors about sake brewing (including a video with English subtitles describing all steps in the production and preparation process). There are also many other things on display. On the other hand the more professional setup makes it much less personable.
Sake tasting is self service with small plastic cups. We liked the sake in some of the other breweries better - it i guess that is individual taste.
We bought some of the sake glases with the small wooden box. Very reasonable price of c.¥500 per piece.
Best place to start your sake tasting endeavour in saijo given the good back ground info.

When we were in Saijo we found the Kamotsuro Brewery was the best to visit as we were greeted on arrival, shown to a room where we watched a 10 minute documentary on the complete process of making sake. The room also had many photos and items used in the process. We were then invited to try as many types of sake as we liked. I must admit that i was not so keen on most of them but i asked which was the best, and i actually liked it so i bought a bottle to take home.

Having quickly developed a taste for sake, we ventured to Saijo whilst staying in Hiroshima. Kamotsuru was the first brewery we visited, which was a short distance from the train station. Inside, a video on loop (in Japanese with English subtitles) showed the process for creating sake, which was informative and interesting.
Of course, the highlight was tasting the sake. Unlike many establishments around the world, visitors are free to pour as little or as much sake as they want, which was helpful when trying to narrow down our preferred bottles with repeated tastes. I won't bother writing what our favourite was, but there is a large range available, sweet to dry, which would suit many palates. Our children were a little bored, but that's to be expected in such a place. The staff there were very pleasant and helpful, ensuring the brewery visit was a good experience all round.

It is the only sake brewery in Saijo that puts a great deal of effort into introducing sake brewing, with displays and promotional videos, and it also has a corner where you can sample good quality sake at a low price, which made me like it even more.

I went to visit Kamozuru Sake Brewery in Saijo, Higashi Hiroshima. In addition to sake, the direct sales store also sells very beautiful sake ware and sake cakes.

What is the best way to get to Kamotsuru Brewery from Hiroshima city center?

What are the operating hours of the brewery?
Written February 3, 2018
If you mean when can they accept visitors the answer is from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, but i suspect you should be there by 4.30 am to see the documentary and have enough time for sampling the product. I went to several of the breweries but the best tasting sake was here.
