かつて塩田で一山あてた豪商の屋敷だそうです。格子にも気を使っており、相当の金持ちだったのでしょうね。

竹原街並み保存地区で最も古い屋敷で、塩田で財をなした豪商の屋敷で竹原での広島藩の本陣としての機能を持っていたとのこと。竹原市町並み保存センターの向かいにあるが、非公開施設で案内板もないので、地図と照らし合わせないとわかりにくい。街並み保存センターの映像で吉井邸の内部や機能を紹介しているのでこちらを先に見るとよい。

広島藩の本陣として使われていた建物。町年寄りを代々務めた豪商の家。実業家でもあったとのこと。見ていても面白い。

建物母屋は町並み保存地区で一番古い元禄4年(1691)築で 吉井家は 小早川家の家臣；吉井肥後を祖先とし 初代；源兵衛は米商人とされています（屋号；米屋）。2代目；又三郎は塩田経営に進出[慶安3年(1650)]、3代目；半三郎は塩の領外売りを独占的に販売出来る塩問屋の認可を取得[寛文10年(1670)]、その後 吉井家は廻船業に進出[元禄16年(1703)] 事業を着々と拡大し 代々 年寄役を世襲、地位を維持したようです。本陣にも使用された建物は外観のみしか鑑賞出来ませんが 町並み保存ｾﾝﾀｰに行くと ﾋﾞﾃﾞｵで内部が紹介されています（ﾋﾞﾃﾞｵは約15分、吉井邸、竹鶴酒造、亀田邸&春風館の4軒の内部が放映されます）。
