From Hiroshima Station, you take the train back to Mihara Station. From Mihara, you take the bus to the port when you get on the ferry to the Rabbit Island.
All the rabbits are free and, we can feed them with rabbits snacks (bought it before at the port) and rabbits will come to you, they were familiar with humans. What a great experience

When we got here all was great, bunnies are cute and jump all over you blah blah. Then you start hearing how many are constantly sneezing and then a few come up to you with their eyes straight rotting out of their head and suddenly the bubble is burst and this is no longer a fairytale. It’s incredibly sad. The bunnies need help.

Manage your expectations by watching the latest YouTube clips. There are plentiful rabbits on the island but not an Army of them like those on the old YouTube clips. In summer, 0600 to 0700hrs are the BEST feeding times. They are hungry, they are out for food!!! Evening from 1800-1900hrs is okay too. Any other times, good luck.

As i have a rabbit myself, I couldn't give up the opportunity to visit rabbit island. Its a relatively small island which i covered on foot in less than half a day, stopping to feed hordes of rabbits along the way. If you look close enough, you will notice some of the rabbits have infections or battle scars. Overall a fun experience for animal lover.

The island would be worth visiting even without the rabbits. Such an interesting history and a beautiful surrounding landscape away from the hustle and bustle. We walked the whole island at a slow pace and found a beautiful spot for lunch. The rabbits seemed to love the pellet food we bought at the ferry terminal too, as we missed the chance for the supermarket down the street for something more substantial. But upon returning to the terminal with the bags I received a free rabbit postcard. No matter where you walked, they would run out from no where to say hello. Amazing day I will not soon forget.

As somebody who is obsessed with bunnies this island was a must go. There were so many adorable bunnies to feed and they were very cute. I wish I could go back. There are some sneezing bunnies though, so make sure to feed them.

I and my wife love bunnies. We have bought 2.5kg of bunnies food at local supermarket to take to the island. There were many bunnies there but the food was enough. Besides the bunnies all the time seek us there to get food. They were so cute.

Okunoshima was introduced by CNN and Times as the bunnies’ island in Feb, 2014, but they did not inform the directions to this island. Some of the tourists seemed to get frustrated, so I am writing it down.

We have to cross the sea from Tadanoumi port to Okunoshima by ferry. The round trip charge is 620 JPY. You can buy it at the ticket shop nearby Tadanoumi port. It is the short cruise of 12 minutes and the time table is as follows;
Bound for Okunoshima: 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 19:05
Bound for Tadanoumi port: 9:13, 10:13, 12:13, 14:13, 15:13, 16:13

This is the popular plan for Okunoshima from Hiroshima station.
Hiroshima Station (9:07) – Mihara Station (9:35) by bullet train, Kodama 732
Mihara Station (9:42) – Tadanoumi station (10:03) by local train bound for Hiro (Kure line)
Tadanoumi station – Tadanoumi port, it is a-10 minute walk.
Tadanoumi port (10:30) – Okunoshima port (10:42) by ferry

In order to go back to Hiroshima city;
Okunoshima port (16:13) – Tadanoumi Port (16:25) by ferry
Okunoshima station (17:12) – Mihara station (17:35) by local train (Kure line)
Mihara station (17:42) – Hiroshima station (18:05) by bullet train, Kodama 747

The free transportation bus to the public hotel is waiting at the pier. In case that you want to walk, it is a-15 minute walk to the hotel in a clockwise manner, or a 40-minute walk by a counter clockwise direction. The restaurant and the spa are in the hotel. If you forget about bringing the food for cute bunnies with you, you can buy pellets at the shop in the hotel.

For your referrence, this island was removed from the map during WWII because there were the military facilities. As it is now, some of those facilities can be seen as the ruin and there is the free museum to explain them.

Access and transportation to Okunoshima island
1. Get off the train at JR Tadanoumi station (忠海駅), about 30 minutes from JR Hiroshima station

2. From JR Tadanoumi to Tadaoumi ferry pier, at the exit of the JR station, turn right and walk about 10 minutes until finding the bridge, then turn right at the junction before the bridge.

3. Walk 1 minute until you cross the railway, on the right hand side, there is a 2 storey ivory house with the sign "Minato Oasis Tadanoumi" where ferry tickets are sold. (620 yen for round trip, 12-15 minutes)

4. Ferry Timetable, the walking map to Tadanoumi pier, the picture of Minato Oasis Tadanoumi are below

Tips

1. If you forget to bring food for the rabbits, you can buy at Family Mart, next to JR Tadanoumi station (food pellets or fresh vegetable cost 100 yen per pack) or you can buy at the shop in the hotel on the island (a free shuttle bus to the hotel is waiting at the pier when the ferry arrives). However, I suggest you to buy from Family Mart, then you will have more time to play with the rabbits.
2. Few toilets and restaurants around Okunoshima pier.
3. I spent an hour on playing with rabbits. If you want to see the rest of the island, such as museum, you should spend at lest 2 hours on the island.
4. Some people brought their bicycles to travel around the island.

Yes, there are packs of feral bunnies that will climb all over you and eat out of your hands. And there're some random ruins of chemical weapons plants. It's certainly worth a full day of exploration if you're into either or both of those things. Doesn't hurt that the hotel on the island is decently run and has good food.

Getting there isn't terribly tricky; Google Maps has most of the details, but take the train to the ferry (it's about half-dozen or so stops on the local off the Shinkansen). Walk out of the station and turn right, then take the first street right to the port. The ticket booth for the ferry is the first door to your right as you're walking down the street toward the docks.
