About
Come and see today's Fukushima and about nuclear accident. Our standard tour takes you into the current exclusion zone in Futaba and Okuma towns with an official permission, which is a special offer from Real Fukushima, as well as the surrounding areas in Odaka, Namie and Tomioka towns where the evacuation orders have been lifted recently and people are gradually coming back to their home town. The total amount of the radiation exposure through the tour is around 3-5 micro Sievert. You may also encounter and talk to local people who have returned to this area after the 5-6 year evacuation. Our English guide will help you to discover this area, by showing the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and the evacuation by the explosions of Fukushima Daichi Power Plant in 2011 as well as the ongoing projects and positive movements and hopes to this area for the restoration and recreation. Feel the atmosphere and have first hand experience in this triple disaster area with your own eyes!

Karin and her "returnee" friend Midori were excellent guides to this beautiful region of Japan. They live in the area and gave very personal insights into the evacuation and life for "returnees." The 2020 museum documenting the triple disaster and the elementary school tour were exceptional. As others have said in their reviews Karin's tour exceeded our expectations. I would like to return to Fukushima to watch the area's restoration progress.

Very Nice one day trip, from Tokyo it is about 3 hours via train and you at picked up at the station. We were greeted by the very lovely Karin who was our tour guide. The next 6-7 hours we where driven to different sites and learned quite a lot about the disaster, both the taunami and the nuclear incident, so highly recommended. Karin spoke good English and we felt in good hands all the way - note the group size can’t be more than 5, it’s a minibus - but a very nice spacious minibus

Amazing trip to see Fukushima and the unfortunate disaster. Karin was a great guide from start to end, very knowledgeable and brought us through the surrounding areas, and even had us visit a local, who had stories to tell from the evacuation and final return to her village. A 6 hour trip well worth it!

We booked a tour with Karin round Fukushima having wanted to visit the area for a number of years. The tour completely exceeded our expectations and we had a great time! Karin was a great tour guide and really easy to talk to, and having the tour for just the two of us made it really personal. Karin took us to visit a local returnee which was an excellent experience and we left her house genuinely feeling like both us and the returnee had gained something. A bit of a long day from Tokyo but well worth it, thank you Karin 😊

Karin was a very good host. Her knowledge and concern about the area was apparent. It was a small group (three in our group), which made the experience memorable. My favorite part was our stop at an elementary school, where we talked to a person in the museum who was in the area on 3-11. I looked out over to a hill where all of the schoolchildren escaped to safety. It was nice to tour a place where a quick decision saved so many lives. Karin talked to us about the reality of the area today, which was refreshing. I feel it is very important to remember what happened on 3-11, and visiting some of the areas that were so tragically affected helped make that possible.

I stayed in Tokyo and took the Hitachi Express to do the tour in Fukushima. The whole tour was absolutely mind-blowing. Karin is an amazing Tourguide who organizes everything perfectly and really takes care of her clients. I highly recommend this tour to anybody. Be prepared to rush though, since there are so many things to see

In 2011, march 11, a magnitude 9 earthquake followed by a 15 meter high tsunami hit the north east coast of Japan. The Fukushima Daiihci nuclear power plant was damaged by the tsunami and radioactive material leaked into the surrounding environment. The area around the power plant was thus struck by a triple disaster, causing widespread suffering and distress for the local inhabitants.
The tour gives the story of this catastrophe, told by a guide living in the local community. It is a story which is both interesting, sad and moving but also with a bit of optimism. I have attended many guided tours, many forgotten, but his one I know I will never forget.
To see the empty site of a fishing community, which contained four hundred houses before the tsunami hit, was very moving. Only the remnants of a single house, the local school and the graveyard was left.
Four citys with something like 80000 inhabitants were evacuated because of radiation danger, today less than 10% has moved back. To actually see some of these ”ghost towns” with empty houses and empty streets makes you understand the harsh reality of this disaster and how deeply it has affected the population in this area.
We were also able to visit the still closed area around the nuclear power plant, and saw houses, cars, restaurants and a home for the elderly left just as it was on the day of the disaster. Also to see several enormous storage sites for soil contaminated by radioactivity is not something easily forgotten. But there is a bit of optimism also, local railway stations have been reopened and in some of the cities there is activity and an increase in the population.
I can highly recommend this tour. The guide, being a local, has expert knowledge of the area and events and is very good at communicating in an informal and easy way.
The tour gives, in my opinion, an unsentimental and true story of what happened in Fukushima and how it affected people living there. As such it is an important part of contemporary history, not only for Japan, but for the rest of the world as well.

This tour was really wonderful, sad and moving. We went to see everything about the disaster, the sad stories, the powerplants and the empty houses. The power of nature and mankind combined. But we also saw the new Fukushima. The villages that are building up again. Train stations with newly planted flowes, guesthouses openingen and sushi restaurants full with people eating lunch. Lives still goes on.
What I especially liked is that I did not get pushed or forced in thoughs or opinions. There was space for all questions I had.
The tour exceeded all my expectations.
Would definitely recommend everyone to go with this tour.

It’s hard to find the superlatives to really describe this tour due to the devastating nature this event had on the Japanese people. It was the most eye opening day of my time in Japan. Calling the viewing of a real life major tragedy the highlight of my trip doesn’t feel entirely right, though in some ways it was.
Karin was a fantastic guide, very accommodating and informative.
This is the one thing I did in japan that I have been recommending to everyone I speak to. If you get the chance I can’t highly recommend it enough.
