This ia a local tourist building with a restaurant, gift shop and ticketing office for the dogtooth violet viewing tour.

A ten minutes' drive from Kakunodate takes you to Nishiki Town in the same Senboku City. Nishiki Town is known for clusters of dogtooth violets (katakuri) with purple flowers that bloom from April to May. The clusters are in chestnut farms, which open to visitors during the bloom period. We went to a local tourist building Katakuri-kan, with a restaurant, gift shop and ticketing office for the dogtooth violet viewing tour. The clusters of dogtooth violets are scattered in several areas. We were advised by the staff that it would be best to drive through the area as parking spaces and attendants would be at each location. It was a pleasant drive through the woods and the carpets of dogtooth violets were magnificent.

Fields of light purple ... during the right season

"Katakuri" flowers are Japan's Dogtooth Violets ... The area is quite large, made up of 10 sections, on various hills ... and is fairly easy to access by car (about 20 mins from Kakunodate). It's a one-way trip around the park (by car). There were 2 places to stop and park to walk around and take photo's of the flowers. The flowers only last about a week, so timing is important. (But different sections flower at different times.)
Many locals run the place and tell you which way to drive ... and where the best spots are, right now. It was 300 yen per person.
There was a temporary toilet box at the top - not recommended for the faint-hearted. It's probably best to go to the "Eki-no-michi" first, near Yatsu Station ...

Pretty fields of flowers

A pleasant hike up through the fields of flowers. The locals have made the most of the fields and work as a cooperative team to open the fields to tourists. Later the trees are full of chestnuts.
