When visiting Kakunodate most concentrate on the samurai houses this is on the other end of town giving a view of the merchant class.

This is a group of main building and five warehouses apart from each other, transformed to gift shops and restaurants.

The merchant area is called Tomachi (outer town) located immediately south of the samurai residence area. We noticed that the roads were narrower than the samurai area and that although there were many warehouse buildings, only a handful seemed to be well maintained. It is only the samurai residence area that has been designated as one of the earliest Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in 1976. We explored one of the larger merchant stores, Nishinomiya. This is a group of main building and five warehouses apart from each other. The Nishinomiyake homepage informs that the buildings are from the late Meiji to Taisho period (early 20th century) when the family was at the peak of their prosperity as landowners. They have been transformed to gift shops and restaurants. I understand that the Nishinomiya Family was a samurai family reporting directly to the Satake Family in Akita and not the Satake-Kita Family entrusted by the Satake Famiky to govern Kakunodate.
