About
The collections exhibited in the Casentino Archeological Museum originate entirely from local excavations. The ancient history of the valley comes to life with an overall view of material culture through the centuries from Prehistoric, to Etruscan and on to Late Roman times. The Museum is laid out over 6 rooms where artifacts are arranged in chronological order, showing visitors the various phases of ancient cultures of the Casentino. It also offers thematic segments -like the one on Etruscan sanctuaries and on ancient funerary rites- which help clarify important aspects of past cultures. A whole room is dedicated to the important Etruscan votive cache coming from the "Lago degli Idoli" (The lake of the Idols) offering, for the first time, an overall view of the objects found during almost 2 centuries of archeological digs at the site on Mount Falterona. The various rooms are introduced by educational panels and information sheets both in English and Italian, which guide visitors through the itinerary. The Museum also organizes guided tours and educational workshops, mainly aimed at schools, but suitable for groups and families.

In the historic centre of Bibbiena, next door to the Town Hall, there's a small but excellent archeological museum. It contains a variety of prehistoric remains and many very fine Etruscan pieces, some from the Lago degli Idoli on Monte Falterona. The exhibits are beautifully displayed, and the visitor is guided through the rooms by clear, well illustrated explanations easily comprehensible by non-experts like me. Very definitely worth a visit!

The casentino valley between Florence and Arezzo, in the very hearth of Tuscany, is worth a holiday. Bibbiena is an ideal place to stay for a weekend ora a longer visit, and ths little precious museum offers an interesting collection, and from 16 december to 4 February don't miss the wonderful Comics exhibition "I POSTORICI" by the great Cartoonist Luciano Bottaro !

A small museum but prepared with a good taste. I enjoyed it as a whole, but I was astonished by seeing an evolution of a human space by seeing skulls starting with Australopitecus.

We visited Bibbiena on three separate days in late May and early June, each time to find the Museo closed. The sign on the door said it should have been open.
