The King Leopold Ranges in Western Australia was an interesting and beautiful conservation area that we visited about a week ago. The Gibb River Road that we took to get there was not as bad as we had heard even in our 4x4 and the scenery was amazing. Just having finished a book about King Leopold it was a shame that they named such a beautiful park for a man who brought so much pain and suffering to the Congo unless it’s named after another King Leopold. Anyway it is a beautiful place to visit, vast expanses of beautiful scenery, the fabulous gorges and Margaret River as well as rock pools, the ever changing colours of everything and the sheer vastness and emptiness of it, humanoid I mean. Not a lot of people in some places but the occasional tour passing nearby and other 4x4’ers rambling around in the distance. Make sure to bring lots of water and fuel if you are doing a self drive and a spare or two as the GRR can be rougher in parts.

Crossed by the Gibb River Road about 134 kilometres east of Derby, part of the ranges are covered by the 3,921 square kilometres King Leopold Ranges Conservation National Park, is managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation. The ranges separate the main Kimberley plateau from the southern Fitzroy plains and consist of quartz sandstone. The traditional owners of the area are the Ngarinjin, Konejandi and Bunaba peoples.

Gorge lag...

Now I am not saying it is not beautiful as it is a lovely place but I think I have seen so many gorges in such a short time then even the beautiful ones become average. The walk to the gorge is uninspiring I will say that.

Lovely Rock Formations

For miles, all you can see are the beautiful ranges. The different contrasting colours would be an artists delight. Stately old Boab Trees beautiful Ghost Gums!
