We spent 3 days in the area of Kanagawa, the first day walked to the rope car via the harbour. We walked around the castle, that walk opened up a day trip to the Oshima islands as well as viewing FUJISAN from the water. Which was spectacular.

Since we had some extra time, walked to this castle, near train station. The castle was okay, lots of walking up & down stairs. Lots of info in Japanese. But the grounds was great. There are monkeys roaming in a cage. Large fish in the moat. They would jump out of the water. and near this area, lots of small places to eat. I happened to find a sushi place frequented by the locals. The servers don't speak English, so just point at the pictures in the menu. Food was great, and not that expensive. Better than Tokyo.

The castle itself is not terribly impressive, but it is pretty, and the grounds are pretty and relaxing to walk around. It's a great free activity to kill an hour on your way to Hakone.
Tips: Odawara Station has large lockers where you can store your luggage while you walk to see this attraction. It really is a lot of walking just to get there, so don't try hauling your luggage. Also, on hot days be careful to stay hydrated. This attraction is free unless you enter the museum.

Came to visit Odawara to see friends and visited the castle and chrysanthemums accordingly. In days of yore the city was an important staging post between Edo (then Tokyo) and Kyoto. Still has trappings of that period and castle and Museum are well worth a visit.

As mentioned in my review of the castle itself there is a lot of open space and areas to sit while enjoying the day here.
It was great for kids to run around and has restrooms and places to get food.

Odawara castle is about a 15-minute-walk from the station and entry to the park around the castle is free.
By coincidence we were here on the day of the cherry blossom festival, which was really great. There were people in costumes, a large number of food stalls and activities for kids. So, I would definitely recommend going there if you have the chance!
But even without the festival, you can spend a nice hour or two here sitting under the cherry trees, having a picnic and going for a little walk. There is a small train going around, which looked great for children.
So even if you don't want to visit the inside of the castle the schort walk from the station is worth it.

Nice place for some history. View from top is great overlooking the area. A lot of the interior and exterior has been renovated and is not original but is still amazing

The walk through this park was relaxing and the cherry blossom was just coming out when we were there early April. We liked the castle itself too - worth a visit.

It is a large park outside of Odawara castle, a nice place to seat down before or after going to Odawara Castle, one of the buildings in the park had an exhibition called "The Spirits of Samurai" which although small it was very interesting.
