About
《ODAWARA-JUKU NARIWAI Rest House》 Originally a fishing net wholesale shop built in 1932(Showa 7),this facility opened as a "rest house" for citizens and tourists in September, 2001(September of Heisei 13) after being renovated and repaired. Visitors can use the rest house as a place of relaxation and a presentation room for citizens’ activities. Please feel free to drop in. ○Opening Hour:Tourist information, Rest House(1st floor) 10:00-19:00(April to October) 10:00-18:00(November to March) ○Open throughout the year ○No charge 【About the house】 The house was rebuilt in 1932(Syowa 7) from an old one which was badly damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923(Taisho 12). It represents a typical Odawara merchant’s house using a style of architecture originating in the Edo period, “Dashi Geta Tsukuri”. The front of the second floor has bay windows with lattice re-creating the unique traditional atmosphere of an old Japanese inn. This is a precious house, with its characteristic internal design and open, western-style construction(for earthquake proofing) particularly on the second floor, and it gives visitors an impression of what Odawara was like in by-gone days. 【Dashi Geta Tsukuri】 This is typical of architecture of the traditional merchant’s house carried on since the Edo period. The front of the house has eaves and roof set on thick beams. ◇Tourist Information, Rest House 1st floor, 25㎡ of tatami-mat This is a free rest space. Tea is served for free, too. You can get brochures of the city’s tourist spots including MACHIKADO Museums. We stopped here and made paper lanterns (1000 yen per person). You will receive one instructor per table of up to 4 amature lantern makers. My son does not understand Japanese, but the instructor did a great job teaching us how to make beautiful foldable lanterns. Due to the time contraints, we had to pick pre-printed lantern sheets, but if we were one hour earlier, we could customize by priting our names or draw something. Be mindful; however, it would take a couple of hours for the lanterns to completely dry. Perhaps, it would be a good idea to experience lantern making in the morning and come back and pick up your creations later.
The building looks historical, and everyone is free to rest inside when hot or rainy outside. There is a clean toilet and chilled water at no charge.
It took a long time for our driver to fetch our car, which was parked a bit away in a parking lot), but the workers were very pleasant while trying to close out the building. No rushing... Check it out when in Odawara.
