The Hakusan National Park is beautiful, though winter access to the White Road isn't possible due to the snow. Access is from June to November.

It is called White Road because the Kanji for Hakusan is White Mountain and the Kanji for Shirakawa-Go is White River Village. The road connects Ishikawa to Gifu and named as such for each end point.

Autumn is the best time as the leaves turn from green to copper/gold. This is called Koyo and is extremely beautiful.

We went in July, which is Summer, and there was still plenty of snow, with the melt making the rivers and waterfalls run full. We went simply because we had a spare day off and chose this drive on that day.

The park can be hiked and there are many short walks to be taken to absorb the scenery. Unfortunately camping is not allowed, nor is taking flora or fauna from the park.

The one way trip costs around Y1400 - Y1600 depending on the size of your car. Mini buses pay around Y4900. There is a discounted return rate if you want to buy a return ticket when you enter the park.

The road is around 33km and takes around an hour non-stop due to the steepness and windiness of the road. However, you end up stopping at many spots for the photogenic scenery and the drive takes much longer.

There is also an onsen spa beside a waterfall which we walked to, so good shoes are a must if you want to stop and go walking.

Even on a rainy misty day, we were still amazed at the scenery. We do plan to go back next Autumn for the Koyo leaves.

Beautiful views of Japanese nature. Mountains, colors, fresh breeze and
easy to reach from Komatsu or Takayama.

We were there late October and it was beautiful. No public transportation, only privet cars. Tall road. Every stop on the road was nice, there was one bridge with monkeys on it, and one point where we got down to the crick where there was a very nice waterfall, an open onsen . Not an easy path but very very nice.

We joined a tour with White Ring Tours to visit the Shirakawa-go area - it was fabulous. From the World Heritage Gassho huts to the traditional lunch, we had an amazing day. Shirakawa-go is not yet overly commercialised which meant it was not busy and we were able to explore the town in some detail. The tour was well organised even though our guide was not fluent english speaking. He made every effort to use English to explain what we were doing and the company provided a folder of information to explain our itinerary. The bus travelled along the White Road which is very picturesque. It was one of the highlights of our 10 day tour around Japan. We were fascinated with the locality's special "Sarubobo"dolls. Brought several home to bring good wishes.

We did this drive in autumn when we drove from Shirakawa-go towards Ishikawa and the Sea of Japan - This road is opened from June to early November and of course the best time is in autumn! Information about the White Road is available on the internet. There are many lookouts to appreciate the autumn leaves along the glorious drive plus a couple of waterfalls which we didn't have time to explore as we were driving through to Yamanaka onsen.

Tip: There is an option of doing it on a day trip from Shirakawa-go or Takayama. You only need to pay a one-way toll and spend a day exploring the various sights and making a U-turn as you hit the end of the White Road. Each lookout has parking available and some of the bigger ones have snack and toilet facilities. There are car rental companies in Takayama near the train station and do note you need to have international driving licence to rent a car.
