This is a really great natural history museum. It is not a big museum but the collection is well displayed and presents a comprehensive overview of geology, age of dinosaurs, regional natural history (with particular emphasis on fish and birds), and human history. While most of the displays are in Japanese, the layout is well designed to be informative and accessible for English speakers (especially little boys who love dinosaurs).

I have family who live in the area, and they are very familiar with the Gunma Natural Museum, so it was a perfect outing for a rainy day. The museum is beautifully arranged and full of specimens from prehistoric, full sized, dinosaur skeletons to the tiniest modern shrews. Many of the displays are of local fauna. It was entertaining for everyone in our party from the (very happy) 2 years old and his older 4 year old sister, all the way up to their 67 year old grandfather. The displays are well thought out and educational and fun. My husband and I are American (non Japanese speaking) tourists and we had no difficulty understanding the displays, which are mostly in Japanese language, but there are translations available. This a a very nice half day trip, and I highly recommend it as a family outing.

I visited Gunma natural history museum with our good friends and it was an interesting visit. I got an English paper describing the exhibits, but it wasn't necessary as my friend explained and translated everything I wanted to know. The children liked the place a lot but it is nice place for adults also. Some artifacts have been found in Gunma area. For me the most interesting was to see the animals and flowers in Japan.
