Being a driving enthusiast, my main purpose of visiting the Usui Pass was to, well, drive the Usui Pass. It is featured in Initial D, and is the home turf of Mako and Sayuki, two female racers that enthusiasts should be familiar with. Anyhow, the...More

I went to Usui Pass on a brisk winter afternoon. There was an icicle warning in the tunnels and on the bridge. Completely constructed from bricks, the railroad bridges stand majestically among majestic mountains. The walk through the train tunnels does not have anything steep,...More

Itinerary and day trips for 30 day trip starting March 21 (3 Replies)
Hi: Using the great advice to-date from this forum, I decided about the itinerary. I have hotel reservations in 6 locations, as we do not like to move too often and like to have reservations before our trip. There are more places than we can go to for day trips, so I am trying to select them, taking into consideration the following: - are not into shopping but love to go to local markets - are just walkers, are not hikers or bikers - are not trying to see everything (all shrines,...More

Instead of a day trip from Kanazawa Takayama deserves an overnight stay, especially if you are going for its spring festival. Look up accommodation once it is available and plan on spending the night there on April 14 so that you can take in the colourful evening parade. There are 2 interesting local morning markets in Takayama but not sure if they remain open during the festival dates.

Day trip to Karuizawa in the summer (3 Replies)
I am planning for our family (I, my wife and our 10 yeas old daughter) a day trip in the summer to Karuizawa. We would take a Shinkansen train from Tokyo in the morning, spend the day in Karuizawa and then return to Tokyo with Shinkansen. When I searched this forum I noticed, that Karuizawa is a popular destination in wintertime but there was no so much information for summertime. I have planned so far that we would visit: - The shopping area (Karuizawa Ginza) - Usui Pass Observation...More

We went there last month and it is a lovely spot to visit during the warmer months, and it is only an hour or so away from Tokyo. Renting a bike is an excellent way to get around while in Karuizawa. You could even consider going to an onsen as they are also accessible by bus and a casual pass is bout 1000 yen or so. We drove so I don't know the specifics of getting to the waterfall, but it does seem a bit convoluted (and once there is it a reasonably quick trip to the waterfall).
