Villa of Robert W. Irwin & Wife Iki, 1st Legal International Marriage in Japan
Sep 2021
Knowing Hawai'i became a USA state in 1959, I was curious about the "Kingdom of Hawaii". This was the villa of a high ranking official, Robert W. Irwin, a Consul-General of the Hawai'i Kingdom in Japan, late 1885, who negotiated the immigration treaty with Japan (Kanyaku Imin).
There is some information about the history between Ikaho and Hawai'i, still sister cities even now, artifacts, and pictures, beautiful corridors and a private garden. The villa was designated an Ikaho Historic Site at the 100th Anniversary of the Japanese Emigration.
And every July, Ikaho has a Hawai'ian Festival with hula dancing from all over Japan, and famous teachers from Hawai'i.

But I found their marriage more interesting:
"Irwin took action... and pushed both governments to make the marriage legal. However, it took the Japanese government 6 years to approve such a marriage, and the U.S. government took 12 years before legalizing it...on March 15, 1882." Quoting Philbert Ono, photoguide.jp
