The Fukui Prefecture Dinosaur Museum is truly a gem in the world of museums. From the moment you walk through the doors, you are greeted by the wonderful design and layout of the museum. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome and valued as a visitor.
The educational material presented throughout the museum is top-notch, providing visitors with a wealth of knowledge about dinosaurs and their prehistoric world. The restorations and reconstructions of the dinosaurs are beautifully done, allowing you to truly envision what these magnificent creatures looked like millions of years ago.
What stood out to me the most was the thoughtful way the displays were laid out. Despite the museum being quite popular and busy, it never felt overcrowded or noisy. I appreciated the considerable thought and effort that went into making sure visitors could fully immerse themselves in the exhibits without feeling overwhelmed.
My visit to the Fukui Prefecture Dinosaur Museum made a huge impact on me and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. It is not to be missed by young or old and is sure to leave you in awe of the incredible world of dinosaurs.

We absolutely loved the day at the museum. There's a great anime film that's shown without subtitles in English but we still were able to watch and enjoy it- we combined this with the nearby echizen daibutsu and temple. what a perfect day. don't miss this great museum and cute town.

I went there with my all 4 children . My eldest son (13 years old) is a dinosaur fan. We were impressed with the buildings and the exhibitions that show the dinosaur skeletons in each period.Everything outside also concerned dinosaurs . It is a must go to see place for dinosaur lovers . You'd better take a Taxi from Katsuyama station ( Echisen route from Fukui station) and be back to the station by public bus in front of the museum.

Please note that I actually visited this museum in June 2015, however I felt compelled to publish the instructions on how to get there to prospective travelers.
The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is one of the top 3 dinosaur museums in the world and most overseas tourist to Japan miss seeing it. The main reason behind this is because it is a concerted effort to get there, but well worth it. If you have been to the Royal Tyrrell Museum at Drumheller Alberta Canada, then you will know what to expect, except that the Japanese do it with a twist and also have mechatronic dinosaurs! A throw-back of the influence of Voltron.
Before setting out, check that the museum is open on the day that you intend to visit it. Note that the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month, the museum is closed -- don't get caught out here.
Now first you have to get to Osaka (or Kyoto) and catch the JR Express Toyama {Thunderbird) to Fukui. The Osaka station to use is the JR connection at Uemeda or use Shin-Osaka. You can use your JR Pass for this (or buy a ticket). The journey takes about two and an half hours so pack a lunch. After arriving at Fukui Station, exit the terminal and it's a short walk toi the Eichzen Railway Station. From there, buy a ticket to Katsuyama. It costs 750 yen for an adult. The trip takes one hour. At Katsuyama Station there is a bus (non-JR) that will take you to the museum for 100 yen, but if it's not there I wouldn't wait for it. Take a taxi instead for 1600 yen. The bus service is not very frequent and you could be waiting up to an hour. There is an attendant at Katsuyama Station that will arrange a taxi for you. The taxi ride takes about 10 minutes. Entry to the museum costs 700 yen for an adult. You should ask at the museum ticket counter for the bus and train schedule so that you can plan the length of your visit. It's best to visit the museum on the weekdays as I imagine that it would get very busy on the weekends and the transport services are limited.
Besides the dinosaur fossils, in true Japanese style, there are mechatronic animations of your favourite dinosaurs. Remember to visit the Dino Lab there and get a stamp. Also I would recomend that you buy the book of the museum for 1600 yen as a momento. It's bit of an effort to get there but I hope you find the museum as enjoyable as I did.

This was a great way to spend several hours while in Fukui. We were given a flyer at the Information Station at Fukui Station, entitling us to the train and bus ride to the museum and entrance to the museum for about 2100 yen adult fare. Having seen the dinosaur Sue in Chicago, and the dinosaur exhibit at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, I was not prepared to be so blown away by this museum. There are over 40 dinosaur skeletons from all over the world, with explanations in Japanese and English of the types of dinosaurs, where they were found, what they would have eaten, how they walked, if they were predator or prey (and how the latter defended themselves). Replicas of what they looked like, many animated, were found throughout the museum. It was very worthwhile. On the road into the museum there appears to be an area for children to become budding paleontologists, searching for bones in a large setting. Nearby was a children's play area with a huge slide.
There are 2 bus routes between the train station and the museum, the blue dinosaur bus that is direct and takes about 10 or 12 minutes, and the green local bus that takes more than twice as long. We went to the museum on the blue bus but returned on the local bus, an enjoyable introduction to the area.

This is one of the largest dinosaur museums in the world and there are hundreds of dinosaurs skeletons (some are reconstructions, some are actual fossils) along with other prehistoric animals, such are early mammals and birds. Kids will be enthralled and adults will feel like kids again.
From Fukuiguchi station, you can buy a combo ticket that includes a return train ride from Fukui to Katsuyama, the bus to the museum and the museum entry fee. I was staying in Kanazawa and I managed to do the museum and the Tojinbo cliffs in one day (just!).

Very modern and very interesting dinosaur museum, for all ages. Recommended as a day trip from Kanazawa. Easily accessible by (infrequent) community bus (stops right in front of Katsuyama station). Ask at Fukui Echizen station whether they have day-passes for the dinosaur museum, the trainride, and the bus.

The long 2 hr journey from kanazawa whereby we changed 2 trains and took a bus to the museum is really worth it. The museum exhibits were amazing with real life dinosaur models that really excite the kids. We had fun with the dino lab where the kids can play around with the exhibits. We managed to watch 1 animation which lasted around 20mins and the kids enjoyed that too. There is also a great outdoor playground with long slide and dinosaur theme too where the kids can run about. Best part was that the combination ticket for train, bus and entry for kids below primary school is free while adult costs 2130 yen. Worth a visit !

Really amazing museum with lots to see and do. Unforunately there's not a lot of English available, but it was still enjoyable without it. Furthermore the surrounding town is absolutely beautiful, with snow-capped mountains surrounding the area.

It was easy getting from Fukui to the Katsuyama train station, and although we had paid for the bus to the museum (included in the train ticket) we decided for personal reasons to take a taxi, which turned out to be more expensive than those in Kyoto!
Once at the museum, the staff were very friendly, and as we walked around one of the staff members made sure we understood which dinosaur bones were real and which were models. She was very informative, checking in on us every now and then, and we had a great time. One of the best day’s of our Japan holiday!
