We were enjoying a lovely walk in this area when we came across this lovely temple, Ryogenji Temple. We nearly missed it as it sits in a side street of the main road. It is a good area to walk as there are quite a few Temples / Shrines here and some very old traditional houses. Around the Temple are many grave sites and engraved head stones going back many generations. Could not find out much about the temple as nothing there in English but it is very old, even the surrounds have that lovely old mossy look about them. To the back of the complex which is only small there is a raised section with a very strong wooden structure holding a massive metal Japanese style bell , it is quite ornate and must sound lovely when hit with the big wooden hammer attached to the side of the structure. Amongst the trees there is a very old impressive statue of the Buddist Monk Shiran-Shonin who hundreds of years ago walked Japan teaching his faith, I have seen his statue before in other parts of the country, I guess he is like a Saint in the Buddist world. Well worth visiting this small but old temple , it would be interesting to know more of it's history.
