The brewery is a bit inconveniently located for a visit by public transport but they offer a free shuttle bus from about three or four train station. However, it takes a good hour and a half to visit from central Tokyo. Another disappointing thing was the 500 yen charge for the brewery tour when every other brewery in Japan offers similar tours for free. The tour was conducted entirely in Japanese and we were only handed a simple pamphlet in English to follow along.
The tour was typical going through the history of the company along with the simplified explanation of the brewing process before passing through the production line. Few videos were shown during the tour but none of them offered English subtitles. Compared to the lengths other breweries go to accommodate tourists (some have audio guides, or a more thorough laminated booklet), this brewery simply had us just tag along with the pamphlet which had minimal explanations.
The tour ended with a 20 minute tasting which offered only the Sapporo Black Label beer. Zero alcohol beer and soft drinks were offered for children and drivers. While the premium version Yebisu was served at the adjacent restaurant, it wasn’t offered during the tasting which disappointed lot of visitors. Everyone received a souvenir glass at the end of the tour, which partially justified the 500 yen fee but it was one of the more disappointing brewery tours in Japan.

I'd like to visit the Antarctic expedition museum ship SHIRASE 5002, which is right next to Sapporo Beer. I see in a review a mention of a free shuttle bus to Sapporo Beer, and I saw the same thing in Google Maps comments. Is there a schedule for the tour bus (when does it start and end, and how often)? Which train stations does it service? If I use the bus, am I obligated to purchase a beer tour pass? Thanks!

Is it necessary to register for the tour or can you just show up and pay 500 yen? If not, how do you register for the Sapporo tour?
