About
Cavagrande del Cassibile is a canyon with gorgeous waterfalls, swimming holes and awe-inspiring limestone formations. Make your way down to the pool with a waterfall for a refreshing dip. Pack plenty of water and sunscreen, and wear appropriate footwear and protective clothing—it gets pretty hot in summer, and there is little in the way of shade. In recent years, the hiking trail here has been officially closed to the public due to dangerous conditions. However, attendants at the information counter are happy to offer a map and advice if you are determined to push on regardless. If you decide to hike, you’ll be rewarded with a challenging but peaceful trek with stunning views. – Tripadvisor

    Wonderful place to swim
Quite a ‘trip’ to get to the pools below, but worth it! It starts with +-1km of very bumpy road to the ‘info-center’. Bring your own food and drinks, nothing for sale here. They can help you out with tapping water if needed. After a short info (telling you to only walk the ‘green’ trail and that everything that could happen is on your own responsibility), we went down; not an easy walk, but if you exercise and have appropriate shoes, should not be an issue. Swimming in the pools is SUPER. The way back up is harder of course; but with enough water and resting from time to time in the shade, we made it fairly well. But certainly take enough water!!

    A lovely hike… but!
A wonderful experience, the most beautiful part of the trail is closed off but we ‘stumbelled’ over the barrier… we met some very nice people and had amazing views of the gorge. Unfortunately on our return to the ‘car park’ we found our car, and several others, had been broken into. We were lucky the there was nothing to take but some of our neighbours lost cash, bags and passports. We subsequently found out that this is a common enough event at this venue. What’s more annoying is that there are staff onsite but no ‘official’ car park.

Visiting the grand Canyon of Sicily
Our Guide was very friendly and explained us the surrounding and showed us plants special for this area. The highlight was to take a dip in one of the pools with clean, clear water. So refreshing. The tour was easy to go. Really great Landscape with beautiful views.

Before going we didn’t see much recent info about the trail or what to expect, so here’s an update as of May 2022. There is a large parking lot at the start of the trail and on the morning we hiked an information booth with a woman who gave us a map and explained that while the trail was officially closed we could hop over the three foot gate right there. (If you get there and you can’t hop the gate, you’re not in condition for the hike.) Next to the info booth is a restaurant with water, Powerade and sodas. As a rule of thumb, if it is 75 and sunny, you will want to have two liters of water with you. It is strenuous and there’s little shade. And it is a steep trail. But the gorge is absolutely stunning. Bring your polls if you packed them. Hiking boots aren’t necessary. You could do it in trainers. I wore Keens and they were perfect as they generally are for most hikes. Depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos or water it takes about 50 minutes to get down to the second pool with the small waterfall where most people swim. In May on a sunny 80 degree day it was slightly cold but very refreshing. A few people dove in just to give you an idea. There were about 20 there midday - French, Italians, Brits, Swedes, Americans from what I could tell. Not crowded at all. The hike back up will take a third longer than going down. And again, there’s just a little shade. At the top you may get something more to drink at the restaurant or something from the ice cream freezer if it’s a hot day. Swimming at the bottom of the gorge is a treat. A great hike.

This place is heaven.... some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. We went in the height of summer in August so it was boiling, to say the least. The walk down took about 45 mins (we are fit 30-year-olds), it was more the stopping to let people past and overtake which took the time. The ground is pretty uneven so make sure you wear trainers or proper hiking boots. When you get down you are greeted with the most spectacular natural spring pools, crystal clear blue/green water and it was super cold which is what you need in August!! Keep walking a bit further on though, as the pools only get better and bigger the further you go. The waterfall is also great. The walk up took about 45 mins, but we were really pushing ourselves. Take LOTS of water and pictures you will want to remember this place. Highly recommend!!!

Very hot even in September when temperatures were still in the mid 30s.
The main path is closed with an iron gate due to the dangerous condition of the path, however the car park attendant allows you to climb over the gate, presumably as a test.
The path is hard with lots of loose stones which makes for slow going
I was first down so enjoyed the pools to myself for about 30 min. then others began to appear, slowly at first then more and more so I stared the upward climb.
More and more people, some wearing flip flops and even small children!
The climb out was hot, hot, hot!
The experience was spoiled mainly by the amount of rubbish, tissues, wet wipes, etc. dropped which seems to be a major problem in Sicily.
A bit further down the rad there is a second access to different pools which is open so we did this the next day. Much more enjoyable as not only is the path better but the access is shaded but trees and there are far fewer people and consequently almost no rubbish!
You also get to meander along above the river through a shaded path before returning by Path B which is not so shaded as Path A so if the heat bothers you you could return that way.
Altogether a much more peaceful and enjoyable experience.
However being an elderly Scotsman with Presbyterian masochistic tendencies I would prolly do both again!
This was much more enjoyable as not only

Unfortunately we didn't see the previous review before setting off from Ortigia. The drive up was pretty stunning but when we arrived we found that wire fencing was up to stop you from climbing the gate. There are works on-goung until 19 Nov 2020 so hopefully visitors next year can enjoy!

CLOSED!
Really looked forward to visiting this beautiful place.
Sadly you cannot get down to it now!
Apparently you used to have to climb over a gate & make your way down - however arrived today to find 10 foot fences every where! Apparently there are geologists are at work.....
Either way they clearly do not want this place visited for swimming - unless you are prepared to actually cause criminal damage of course
Nice view.....

It was a hot day and we started quite early. The route is officially closed but if you are happy to accept responsibility for yourself there is nothing to stop you for hiking down to the pools. You have to be reasonably fit and able to climb over the gate on to the trail. The trail is rocky and uneven so you definitely need good shoes. The views are great and the path is lined with pretty flowers and lizards skitter every where. There is little shade and the path is quite narrow in places. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the bottom of the gorge and the pools are stunning and the water crystal clear. There were only 2 other people when we arrived. The water is cool and refreshing and full of fish and tadpoles. The rocks can be a bit slippery so take care but it's definitely worth taking swimming gear. We were told it would take an hour or more to climb back up but I did it in slightly less. We met more people coming down and the path is narrow in places so you have to stop to let people pass - everyone was friendly. It was a hot sweaty climb up to the top and over the gate but the cafeteria was well stocked with cold drinks. It's a rewarding hike with great views and the swim is very much recommended.

We parked in Laghetti di Cavagrande - Parcheggio Carrubella. This is a stony road going past a farm and uphill until you arrive at a big spot for parking. We chose path A and were downhill pretty fast. This is the sunny side of the hill. We just chose a random spot for bathing and were alone.
